The Senior RF DOCSIS Test Engineer resides in the Lab Services department at CableLabs. This department is responsible for the execution of DOCSIS Certification as well as all commercial testing engagements. Our team plays a crucial role in delivering results that ensure compliant and robust cable modems and wireless equipment are available to our members.
Why This Role Is Exciting
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior RF Test Engineer with proven expertise in DOCSIS technologies and RF system testing for the cable industry. This role is critical in validating the performance, compliance, and reliability of DOCSIS-based equipment, ensuring products meet rigorous certification standards and industry specifications.
What You'll Do:
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve test environments, procedures, and scripts used to evaluate RF performance and interoperability, driving innovative solutions that increase efficiency and effectiveness across multiple certification programs. Conduct RF certification testing on DOCSIS equipment, independently resolving complex cross-system issues, and produce detailed test reports and certification documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyze test results using analytical thinking to diagnose root causes across multiple systems and technologies, and present clear technical recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Operate and maintain advanced RF test and measurement equipment including Averna and ePIDoX PHY test systems, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams that define the specifications and acceptance test procedures (ATPs), accurately execute those tests, and collaborate to troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise.
  • Provide technical leadership to small project teams assigned to certification initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers and technicians on RF testing methodologies, equipment operation, and troubleshooting techniques, using formal and informal approaches to build team capability and redundancy
  • Stay current with DOCSIS standards, RF technologies, and cable industry trends to guide test strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What Is a Must Have:
  • 7+ years of experience in RF testing, certification, or system verification within the cable industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOCSIS HFC and network architectures, protocols, and industry standards
  • Familiarity with cable modem, CMTS, and network system testing.
  • Strong knowledge of RF circuit design, signal integrity, and system-level interactions.
  • Proficiency with RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to grasp new concepts quickly and apply them effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to present technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to work both independently and in team environments.

What Will Set You Apart:
  • Prior experience with Averna and ePIDoX PHY test systems.
  • In-depth understanding of the operation and functioning of physical layer technology in DOCSIS Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) networks.
  • Experience with automation tools and scripting languages for test execution (e.g., Python, Tcl).
  • Knowledge of compliance and certification processes with CableLabs or similar industry organizations.
  • Experience testing of wireless technologies (e.g. Wi-Fi, 5G NR).

Working conditions and physical requirements:
This job operates in a professional office and lab environment. This role routinely uses standard office and computer lab equipment. Working conditions for our office and lab environment typically involve indoor settings, often with a mix of standing, sitting, and walking, along with the use of hands and fingers to operate computer equipment. Office workers also need to communicate through various means, including telephone, email, and in-person discussions, and they may be subject to moderate noise levels from office equipment. Lab workers may be required to lift, move, and transport related laboratory equipment up to 50 lbs. This role is based in Louisville, CO with the expectation that the individual will work in the CableLabs testing lab 80% of the time on average.
