What is a divorce paralegal?

Divorce paralegals are legal professionals who assist attorneys in handling divorce and family law cases. Their responsibilities often include preparing legal documents, organizing case files, communicating with clients, and conducting research relevant to divorce proceedings. While they are not licensed to give legal advice or represent clients in court, they play a crucial support role in ensuring the smooth management of divorce cases. Their work helps lawyers be more efficient and makes the legal process more accessible for clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a divorce paralegal?

To thrive as a Divorce Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of family law, legal research, and document preparation, typically supported by a paralegal certificate or associate degree. Familiarity with legal case management software, court e-filing systems, and Microsoft Office Suite is often required. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and empathy help you manage sensitive client information and deadlines effectively. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate, efficient case handling and providing valuable support to attorneys and clients during emotionally charged divorce proceedings.

What are some common challenges a divorce paralegal faces when managing multiple client cases simultaneously?

Divorce Paralegals often handle a high volume of cases, each with unique deadlines, documentation, and emotional client needs. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and attention to detail, as missing a filing deadline or misplacing important documents can have significant legal consequences. Additionally, paralegals must maintain professionalism and empathy while supporting clients through stressful situations, and collaborate closely with attorneys to ensure smooth case progression. Effective communication and time management are key to overcoming these challenges.

Job description

We remove the chaos and overwhelm of divorce and custody cases so clients can rebuild their lives. That only works because our paralegals keep every case moving, catch problems before they become emergencies, and never let a deadline slip.

We're not looking for someone who just wants a paralegal job. We're looking for someone who wants to run point on family law cases from filing to trial, lead a legal assistant, and be the person the attorney and clients trust completely.

If you've done real trial prep — not just discovery, but briefs, witness lists, exhibit lists — if you have a passion for family law, and you want to be part of a firm that's grown 300% in 3 years, apply today.

If this is you, please apply today! We are looking for our Champion!

Compensation:

$57,000 - $65,000 yearly plus bonuses

Responsibilities:
  • Own the case timeline. Every task done, every deadline met, no exceptions.

  • Prepare Petition packages with Disclosures, RFOs/motions, full discovery (propound and respond), subpoenas, and all trial documents — briefs, witness and exhibit lists, judgments — under attorney supervision.

  • Supervise and direct your assigned legal assistant's work product and deadlines.

  • Communicate directly with clients: gather information, request documents, give regular case updates.

  • Work fluently across 2-3 monitors in Smokeball. We are paperless except for trial binders.

  • Track time diligently and accurately, meeting an annual billable requirement of 1440 hours.

Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of family law paralegal experience, including hands-on trial prep (briefs, witness/exhibit lists) — not just intake or discovery.

  • Experience supervising or directing another team member's work.

  • Comfortable in a fully digital, multi-monitor case management system (Smokeball or similar).

  • Strong written communication — you'll draft documents an attorney can file with minimal edits.

About Company

Our standards: We live by our core values — Integrity, Teamwork with Enthusiasm, Communication with Clarity and Compassion, Curiosity and Innovation, Service Through Systems, and No Abuse (we don't tolerate it toward clients or teammates, and we don't tolerate it from them either). If that doesn't sound like you, this isn't your firm.

WE OFFER: Competitive pay, PTO, Flexible hours, 401(k), and Bonus/incentive compensation
