Job Definition
"Be part of the crew that keeps everything moving." Join the City of Superior's team as a Light Equipment Operator.
Driver License/Endorsement Requirement: Must possess and maintain valid Class B Commercial Driver's License AT TIME OF APPLICATION. The City will assist with training to upgrade to a Class A license, if interested.
Starting Wage: $23.90 base starting wage for Light Equipment Operator. Opportunities to work in higher paying positions. Medium Equipment Operator wages start at $26.13 and Heavy Equipment Operators start at $28.36. You must have a class A CDL license to work as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
Work Location: City Garage 2301 Hill Avenue, Superior, WI 54880
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm and as needed otherwise for overtime callouts. (40 hours/week).

Purpose & Overview
Performs a variety of tasks requiring manual labor as well as skilled work of a varied nature in the operation of motorized equipment categorized as light equipment; does related work as required.
Employment Standards
General Responsibilities
1. Perform all work in a safe manner utilizing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
2. Haul materials, supplies, equipment, and trailers using a truck with GVWR over 26,000 pounds requiring the possession of a Class B CDL.
3. Perform tasks in relation to asphalt operations by way of patching, hauling asphalt, flagging, and other miscellaneous labor activities.
4. Remove snow from city lots, paths, sidewalks, and streets/alleys using a pickup truck with a plow or a dump truck with a plow and wing
5. Respond to emergency and overtime call outs as required, performing necessary activities and referring questions or problems to the Working Foreman or Supervisor.
6. Operate a variety of equipment, as required.
7. Perform tasks related to traffic control by way of driving/operating an arrow board truck, and/or a dump truck with a trailer attenuator.
8. Refer construction or assignment related problems to Working Foreman for resolution.
9. Complete daily logs, work orders, inspection reports, surveys and other records or reports as required, providing complete documentation of necessary information.
10. Use a variety of hand and power tools,
11. Refer problems and citizen complaints to the supervisor or division manager for resolution.
12. Assist in the repair, rehabilitation, and replacement of structures and pipes.
13. Transport equipment, construction supplies, and materials.
14. Fuel, clean, grease, maintain, and inspect trucks and equipment.
15. Operate a scissor lift or forklift with proper training.
16. Perform fall and spring cleanup operations by way off removing brush, refuse, and rakings from city streets and alleys.
17. Erect and maintain erosion control devices.
18. Maintain and clean facilities.
19. Assist Maintenance and Construction Division as required.
20. Assist with tasks in relation to concrete operations by way of forming, pouring and repairing.
21. Operate a jackhammer.
22. Construct and maintain fences and signs.
23. Assist Engineer Technicians as required.
24. Assist in demolition site activities.
25. Assist in the dispersal of garbage receptacles.
26. Assist in recycling activities.
27. Collect and dispose litter and windblown material.
28. Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge
  1. Road maintenance and construction procedures, materials, and equipment.
  2. Occupational hazards and the safety precautions for performing light equipment operator tasks.
Skills
  1. Operate multi-purpose motorized equipment in a thorough, effective and efficient manner.
  2. Use and care for tools and equipment used in general maintenance, construction and repair work..
  3. Make minor repairs and adjustments of equipment.
  4. Keep records for billing purposes.
Ability

Requirements/Special Requirements
Education & Experience Requirements
Any combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way of qualifying for this position would be through:
  1. Equivalent to high school graduation or possession of GED certification six months experience performing laboring tasks in the operation of road equipment and in road construction or maintenance.

Requires
Operation of multi-purpose light equipment.
Must possess and maintain valid Class B Commercial Driver's License. Parks and Recreation and Street and ESD Collection Unit employees must in addition maintain a tanker endorsement to drive tankers.
No residency requirement.
Must pass a background investigation as required by U.S. Department of Transportation standards.
Must pass medical examination as required for the occupation unit including a lifting capacity test.
Must pass pre-employment drug screen and will be subject to drug/alcohol testing as prescribed by U.S. Department of Transportation standards.

1) Health/Dental Insurance: Will be effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment. The 2026 monthly health/dental insurance premiums (employee portion is 12.6%) to be deducted from the first 2 paychecks each month:
There are two health plans to choose from for 2026. Plan options and premiums are listed below. The premiums also include dental.

The City has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The 2026 annual deductibles are: $3,400 for Single coverage & $6,800 for Employee+1 or Family coverage. The City will contribute $1,700/$3,400 of that annual deductible into your Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2026, which will carry over if not used and is always yours to use until spent. There is no proration on the deductible or the City's contribution.
2) WI Retirement System (WRS) - The WRS is among the best funded and best managed public pension systems in the country!: You will be required to make contributions to your WRS benefit at 7.20% (in 2026) of your gross wages. The City will contribute the balance of this benefit, 7.20% in 2026 (14.4% going into your retirement!).
3) Life Insurance: To be effective the first of the month following 30 days from the date of hire. Basic coverage (= 1 x annual salary) paid by City (must enroll to receive), ability to purchase four additional units of coverage (= 4 x annual salary) plus spouse/dependent coverage.
4) Paid Time Off:
Sick Leave: For newly hired employees, will accumulate one sick leave day/month and is available immediately as accrued.
5) Vacation: For newly hired employees, seven days of vacation will be prorated from date of hire for use immediately.
6) Paid Parental Leave: Up to six weeks of paid parental leave is available to employees to use following the birth or adoption of an employee's child, or placement of a foster child.
7) Holidays: Eleven holidays off with pay each calendar year plus three floating holidays.
8) Longevity pay when eligible as follows:
After five (5) years of service, employees will receive $.20 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After ten (10) years of service, employees will receive $.30 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After fifteen (15) years of service, employees will receive $.45 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After twenty (20) years of service, employees will receive $.65 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After twenty five (25) years of service, employees will receive $.90 per hour in addition to their base salary.
