Manager of Application Engineering - Power Distribution, USA

Communications wire and cable products transmit low-voltage signals for voice, data, video and control applications. Energy cables include low-, medium- and high-voltage power distribution and power transmission products. The Industrial and Specialty segment is comprised of application-specific cables for uses such as electrical power generation (traditional fuels, alternative and renewable sources, and distributed generation), the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, mining, industrial automation, marine, military and aerospace applications, power applications in the telecommunications industry, and other key industrial segments.

Position Summary:

The Manager of Application Engineering is responsible for overseeing the team responsible for providing technical support to all Power Distribution customers in the United States, working with territory sales managers and the Vice President of Sales to promote new and existing products, and assisting R&D in developing customer-centric new offerings and cost-savings opportunities.

Nature & Scope

Reporting to the Director of Field Services and Innovation with a dotted line to the General Manager of the Power Distribution business unit, the Manager of Application Engineering is accountable for providing technical responses to all customer enquiries, promoting new and existing products, and assisting with quotes and orders as needed across the USA. Overseeing a team of regional applications engineers, the manager is also responsible for organization and planning, talent development, and process improvements for the team as a whole. The Manager of Application Engineering primarily works cross-functionally with outside sales, inside sales, and design engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow the application engineering team for power distribution in the United States

  • Ensure sufficient response to all customer enquiries concerning power distribution products

  • Working with the regional application engineer, participate in major quotes and bids with key customers as needed

  • Work with Design Engineering to provide product optimizations for new and existing customers

  • Provide corrective action reports and responses to major quality concerns

  • Participate in critical customer SRM meetings and customer scorecard reviews as needed

  • Work closely with R&D to develop new products and cost-saving opportunities

  • Participate in industry conferences including IEEE Insulated Conductors Committee and Overhead Lines Subcommittee

  • Participate in standard development concerning wire and cable including ICEA and ASTM

  • Provide guidance as needed to manufacturing to ensure product quality and performance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical)

  • 5+ years' experience in Engineering, preferably Wire and Cable

  • Strong engineering knowledge

  • Strong computer skills, proficient in Excel

  • Ability to participate in cross-functional teams and be an influencer within a matrix organization

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Must have the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to think and act LEAN in order to optimize internal processes and customer offerings

  • Trips to customer locations, manufacturing sites, industry conferences, and trade shows ( at least 25%), including international travel - company travel policy permitting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong managerial skills strongly preferred

  • 5-10 years' experience in Engineering, preferably Wire and Cable

  • Engineering management experience desired

  • Experience working in power distribution or transmission is a plus

  • Willingness to take ownership and drive to success; High energy and urgency level to maintain fast paced environment

  • Creative, critical and analytical thinking ability; Passionate, competitive, and tactical in thinking and style

  • Displays leadership and the ability to manage projects, proficient in conflict resolution, ability to receive and respond to feedback.
