Overview
TRC is seeking an Engineer II to join our Distribution Engineering Group within our growing Power Sector. This is an in-office position, and candidates must be local to our Grand Rapids office location.
This position is responsible for performing complex detailed design of overhead and/or underground electric distribution systems. This work includes the gathering and preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and estimates. Performing detailed design work including the preparation of drawings, specifications, and estimates for review and approval by the responsible engineer. The role will require well-rounded technical aptitude, high problem-solving ability and excellent teamwork skills to be successful.
Responsibilities
  • Create business cases to justify system improvements.
  • Coordination of planning activities as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers.
  • Lead and support capital maintenance and customer-driven projects.
  • Develop, review and authenticate distribution planning documents - Develop, review and authenticate power quality investigations.
  • Develop, support and improve distribution single line diagrams and distribution system switching diagrams.
  • Provide input to support and improve distribution equipment specifications.
  • Participate in procurement of distribution equipment.
  • Follow, develop and improve planning processes and standards.
  • Participate and lead planning initiatives, including presentations to the planning team and senior management.
  • Various reporting to the Distribution management, Project Manager and project team.
  • Assist the Supervisor, Distribution Planning in managing planning activities.
  • Provide technical support to field organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship development skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers.
  • Excellent team player and ability to prioritize assignments to meet commitments.
  • Problem-solving skills with proven ability to deal with engineering issues in a timely fashion.

  • Technical knowledge in power flow, short-circuit, motor starts, and power quality issues such as harmonics and flicker.
  • Technical knowledge in microgrids and Mini grids.
  • Business knowledge in the utility & regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of our Operations groups & the challenges they face day to day.
  • Follows all policies and procedures.
  • Travel to client sites primarily local, however some over-night travel may be required.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Utility Environment Proven experience applying sound judgment to make decisions.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability and/or experience with GIS systems, preferably GTech or Smallworld, and CADD systems (AutoCAD/PLS CADD).
  • Experience working in both field and office environments preferred.
  • Storm Duty.
  • Previous experience working in Distribution, preferably in the distribution design team of a utility.

Compensation: In accordance with local law, the below salary range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, geographical location, and other compensable factors.
Other Compensation: Employee may be eligible for participation in the Company's annual Discretionary Bonus Program which is contingent on Company, Business Segment, and Individual performance against Key Performance Indicators which vary by year and employee.
