Job Overview
Supervises the academics department relating to Adult Basic Education (TABE) testing, GED testing, academic support program testing, disability training and other special training programs in compliance with government, corporate, and management directives. Coordinates supplemental training for staff and students.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties:
Academic Supervisor Duties:
- Supervises and trains staff. Evaluates the performance of subordinates through observation and recommends department and personnel changes to the Career Education Manager.
- Assists the Career Training Services Director in preparation of the department budget; monitors and controls expenditures.
- Assists in the development and implementation of new and revised policies and procedures affecting training programs.
- Coordinates and participates in student counseling activities such as staff/student problem solving; career counseling; and individual student challenges.
- Evaluates instructor's participation in student evaluation panels.
- Coordinates with social development and implementation of new and revised policies and procedures affecting training programs.
- Supervises the development of curricula, instructional materials, methods and techniques. Ensures adherence to approved curricula.
- Provides supervision of the Academic function to ensure accurate and timely reporting of all GED/HSD data in compliance with Data Integrity policies and procedures. Audits academic files periodically to ensure adherence with Department of Labor (DOL) and corporate policies.
- Reviews student testing/evaluation, student surveys, Center English as a Second Language (ESL) program, and ensures effective scheduling of student training.
- Ensures effective participation of training programs in career preparation period.
- Maintains accountability of staff, students and property; adheres to safety practices.
- Reviews, reports, and processes accident/injury reports for staff and student job related injuries. Identifies unsafe practices and develops corrective measures to minimize risk and lost time accidents in accordance with corporate, government and Job Corps regulations.
- Assists with organizing awards and graduation ceremonies.
- The Wellness Manager (WM) and Academic Supervisor (AS) will function as co-Disability Coordinators with support from all center staff as needed to:
- Ensure that all required Disability Program components are implemented, monitored, and maintained in an effective manner;
- Demonstrate commitment to the disability initiative;
- Delegate responsibilities;
- Encourage all staff to take ownership of the program.
Co-Disability Coordinator Duties:
- Participate in the applicant file review process. The WM/DC will lead the applicant file review process and ensure all files are processed in accordance with the applicant file review Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Review academic related files and create accommodation plans for students needing accommodations based on IEP, 504 plans, school records, etc. Enter disability data and reasonable accommodation plans in CIS for all students with disabilities supported by IEP, 504 plans, etc.
- Coordinate the Center's Reasonable Accommodation Process in accordance with the reasonable accommodation SOP.
- Meet with all new students a variety of times during orientation to discuss the center's disability program and the reasonable accommodation process.
- Provide new students with The Reasonable Accommodation brochure and The Job Corps Reasonable Accommodation Request form.
- Ensure the student handbook includes information about the disability program. Review this information to ensure it is accurate and easily understood by students annually.
- Coordinate with safety staff, facilities staff, and managers in all departments to ensure the center's accessibility plan is reviewed and updated annually.
- Provide annual training to all staff on the Disability Program to ensure staff are aware of the process to document a referral when a student discloses a disability and may want reasonable accommodation.
- Review the disability data and reasonable accommodation plans in CIS at least every 60 days to ensure accommodation plans are accurate and notes are taken.
- Work with Business and Community Liaison, Career Transition Staff, and other appropriate staff to develop and maintain partnerships with outside agencies and program s that will assist the center in serving students with disabilities.
- Develop partnerships with organizations/persons with expertise and knowledge in job placement and development of individuals with disabilities.
- Maintain the center's customized Disability Partnership Tool and have this tool available during Disability Program Compliance Assessments.
- Develop center-wide activities for all students to promote disability awareness as approved by the Center Director. Activities will be considered throughout the years. Promote disability awareness by placing disability-related posters and awareness materials on center.
- Maintain accountability of students and property; adhere to safety practices.
- Cultivate and maintain a climate on Center which is free of harassment, intimidation, and disrespect to provide a safe place for staff and students to work and learn.
- Promote student attainment of career success standards through modeling appropriate skills, mentoring students, monitoring skill acquisition and intervening when inappropriate behavior is observed.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform all other duties as requested.
Key Responsibilities:

Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- Associates Degree in a related field.
- Two (2) years related experience.
- One (1) year supervisory experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook at an intermediate level.
- Successfully pass background check and drug test required on the contract.
- Current, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Previous experience with Job Corps program.
- State of Alaska teaching certificate.
Working Conditions:
This position requires the employee to be able to frequently required to sit, stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Work somewhat close to other people, such as when sharing office space. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
