They set strategic direction for design projects, ensure efficient use of SolidWorks tools, and collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and product teams to bring concepts to reality. This role often involves managing budgets, developing team skills, and ensuring that design standards and timelines are met. Directors also stay updated on new SolidWorks features and best practices to keep their teams competitive and innovative.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director SolidWorks?

To thrive as a Director of SolidWorks, you need advanced expertise in mechanical engineering, extensive experience with CAD design, and a strong background in team leadership—often backed by a relevant engineering degree and industry certifications. Mastery of SolidWorks software, PDM systems, and knowledge of related PLM tools are essential for overseeing complex design projects. Exceptional communication, project management, and strategic decision-making skills help drive team performance and innovation. These abilities ensure the efficient delivery of high-quality engineering solutions and the successful coordination of multidisciplinary teams.

How does a director SolidWorks typically collaborate with engineering and design teams to drive project success?

Job description

SolidWorks Mechanical Engineer - Where Design Meets the Shop Floor
Turn Your CAD Skills Into Real-World Impact!
Here's what makes this role different: You won't be chained to your workstation all day. Our engineers are constantly moving between their design screens and the production floor, collaborating hands-on with our manufacturing crew to problem-solve, refine prototypes, and ensure every design works flawlessly in the real world.
At Fenton Mobility, you'll tackle genuine engineering puzzles in a dynamic manufacturing environment where your mechanical ingenuity directly improves people's daily lives through innovative mobility solutions.
Who We Are
Fenton Mobility delivers cutting-edge equipment for vans and buses, creating the industry's safest and most forward-thinking transportation and accessibility products. We're shaping the future of public transit with efficient, sustainable, and inclusive solutions for all passengers. Every product is conceived, prototyped, and built in our state-of-the-art 90,000 square-foot manufacturing center in Randolph, NY.
What Makes This Opportunity Special
  • Be part of a company with serious engineering credentials and numerous patents in specialized mobility innovation
  • Access to advanced tools and technology: robotics, lasers, 3D printing, etc.
  • SolidWorks design creating functional, production-ready designs manufactured on-site
  • Freedom to own your projects from initial concept through final production
  • Split your time between engineering workstation and manufacturing floor
  • Make meaningful contributions to projects that expand accessibility and enhance passenger safety across the country
  • Competitive compensation based on your background:
    • Starting engineers: $50K+
    • Experienced SolidWorks users: $60K+
    • Senior engineers leading initiatives: $70K+

Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Create parts and assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Drive custom fabrication projects from initial sketches through working prototypes
  • Partner directly with shop technicians on the floor to validate designs and optimize manufacturing processes
  • Bridge engineering and production by spending significant time where the building happens
  • Develop technical drawings and documentation supporting manufacturing workflows and regulatory requirements
  • Apply practical problem-solving to overcome mechanical obstacles and enhance our component library

The Ideal Candidate
  • Genuinely excited about mechanical engineering and building tangible products (not just digital renderings)
  • Strong SolidWorks skills with background in design-for-manufacturing or metal fabrication
  • Thrives in an energetic, smaller-scale shop setting-hands-on, team-oriented, and precision-minded
  • Enthusiastic about dividing time between computer-based design and shop floor collaboration
  • Self-directed, well-organized, and brings innovative thinking to team challenges
  • Must be legally authorized for U.S. employment without requiring sponsorship, and able to work on-site in Randolph, NY
