Job description

Mechanical Engineering Manager
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Burlington, MA
Compensation: $150,000 - $165,000 / year
Description
Why should you join our success story?
Based on patented technology developed at MIT, Harvard Medical School and by the Company, Myomo develops and markets the MyoPro® product line of lightweight, non-invasive, powered arm braces (orthoses) to restore function in paralyzed or weakened arms and hands of individuals that have suffered a stroke, spinal cord, or nerve injury. (E.g. brachial plexus injury or other neuro-muscular disabilities.) It is the only device that, sensing a patient's own neurological signals through non-invasive wearable sensors, can restore the ability to use their arms and hands so that they can live independently, increase their quality of life, reduce cost of care, and return to work. Published clinical research shows a clinically significant instantaneous reduction in upper extremity impairment with the MyoPro. Our technology has been referred by leading-edge rehabilitation facilities including Mayo Clinic, Kennedy Krieger Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Loma Linda Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, numerous VA Hospitals, and more. Myomo is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, with sales and clinical professionals across the U.S.
What we're looking for:
The Manager of Mechanical Engineering & Design leads the development of Myomo's wearable robotic orthotic platform (MyoPro), advancing state-of-the-art human-assistive robotics that restore upper-limb function and improve patient independence. This role manages the mechanical engineering team and driving innovation in robotics and human-centered wearable solutions.
A primary focus is ensuring engineering decisions directly support improved patient outcomes, including functional mobility, comfort, ease of use, and quality of life. The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical engineering leadership experience along with expertise in electromechanical product development and medical device design.
This position partners with the Systems Integration Manager, providing leadership for the next phase of product development as we continue advancing our wearable robotic orthotic platform and expanding product capabilities.
How You'll Drive Impact:
Robotics & Wearable Product Development
  • Lead the mechanical design and development of wearable robotic orthotic systems
  • Drive innovation in lightweight structures, actuation integration, and human-robot interaction
  • Optimize designs for durability, performance, manufacturability, and regulatory compliance

Parametric Modeling & Customization
  • Oversee development of parametric CAD models to support scalable customization of orthoses
  • Establish modeling standards and automation strategies within SolidWorks
  • Improve efficiency of custom device adaptation while maintaining design controls

Comfort, Fit & Usability (Human-Centered Design)
  • Ensure products prioritize comfort, weight optimization, adjustability, and long-term wearability
  • Incorporate clinician and patient feedback into iterative design improvements
  • Support usability testing and validation efforts to enhance patient experience

Team Leadership & Engineering Excellence
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Mechanical Engineering team (5)
  • Conduct rigorous design reviews and technical evaluations
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and patient-focused innovation
  • Allocate resources and manage timelines to meet product milestones

Engineering Systems
  • Foster and manage a high-performance design and development environment
  • Manage SolidWorks/PDM systems
  • Help establish best practices for parametric modeling of custom orthotic brace elements

Design Controls & Manufacturing Support
  • Ensure compliance with medical device Design Controls and documentation standards
  • Support verification and validation, and production improvements
  • Partner with Manufacturing to support design transfer and production scale-up

What You'll Bring:
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline. (Master's preferred)
  • 7+ years of experience in Mechanical Design Engineering
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience developing complex robotic or mechatronic systems, including integration of mechanical and electrical components
  • 5+ years' experience medical device or life sciences, or similar
  • Advanced proficiency with 3D CAD design (SolidWorks preferred) including complex parametric modeling
  • Experience designing robotic, electromechanical, or wearable systems
  • Strong knowledge of rapid prototyping and production manufacturing processes, including 3D printing, CNC machining, and injection molding
  • Experience working within Design Controls and quality systems. (FDA, ISO 13485 or similar)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary engineering environment

What Success Looks Like:
  • Build strong working relationships with the Mechanical Engineering team and cross-functional partners
  • Gain a deep understanding of the MyoPro platform, development processes, and product roadmap
  • Assess current development priorities, identifying opportunities to improve execution efficiency and team effectiveness
  • Support ongoing product development and manufacturing initiatives
  • Establish a prioritized plan for future mechanical engineering improvements
