Job Title: SolidWorks Mechanical Drafter / Designer

Job Description

This role focuses on creating, modifying, and updating technical drawings and 2D/3D models for a broad, company-wide mechanical product portfolio. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Drafter collaborates closely with the Engineering Team to develop engineered solutions that meet customer requirements and align with industry trends for product expansion and growth. The position requires someone who thrives in a team-oriented environment, contributes actively to collaborative projects, and can also work independently on daily drafting and design tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Engineering Team to define product specifications, ensure manufacturability, and address key technical aspects of mechanical products.
  • Create detailed technical drawings, manufacturing schematics, and 2D and 3D digital models of mechanical assemblies in accordance with geometry constraints, specifications, and application parameters.
  • Facilitate, update, and maintain the existing product drawing database in line with company-wide drawing and engineering standards.
  • SolidWorks, to efficiently develop and engineer detailed mechanical concepts, illustrations, and models on a daily basis.
  • Serve as the Engineering Team’s subject matter expert in SolidWorks drafting and the effective utilization of SolidWorks-based tools and plug-ins.
  • Provide drafting and modeling support during the conceptual development of non-standard projects and adaptations of industry-standard units.
  • Support efforts to consolidate all product lines into SolidWorks so that each catalog item has a complete technical drawing and configurable model, including different sizes and options.
  • Contribute to the setup and maintenance of configuration-driven models that integrate with configuration tools (such as DriveWorks or similar) to allow customers and sales teams to configure products to specific requirements.
  • Input and maintain accurate data and bills of materials (BOMs) within SolidWorks and associated plug-ins or systems, ensuring consistency and completeness.
  • Prepare and present CAD design and drawing examples during the interview and, once hired, maintain documentation and references for future engineering and customer use.
  • Identify and implement efficiencies in CAD and SolidWorks workflows to help automate the design process and configure models for variations.
  • Work closely with application engineering, product engineering, and quality teams to ensure drawings and models support manufacturing, inspection, and customer requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Associates Degree in Mechanical Drafting or Engineering Technology and at least 3 years of mechanical drafting experience, or a High School Diploma and at least 5 years of mechanical drafting experience.
  • Mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial industry work experience.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, including strong 2D and 3D mechanical design and drafting skills.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM (Product Data Management) for managing models, drawings, and associated data.
  • SolidWorks certification (CSWA – Certified SolidWorks Associate).
  • Ability to act as a SolidWorks subject matter expert for an engineering team.
  • Strong attention to detail when creating drawings, models, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Capability to input and maintain accurate data within SolidWorks plug-ins or configuration tools, with a willingness to learn specialized add-ons.
  • Ability to provide CAD and drawing samples that demonstrate drafting quality, design thinking, and documentation standards.
  • Comfort working in both collaborative team settings and independently on assigned tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with configuration tools or plug-ins integrated with SolidWorks (such as configuration or design automation tools like DriveWorks or similar).
  • CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional) certification.
  • Work experience in the bearings industry or with power transmission components.
  • Experience with raw materials production processes and manufacturing techniques.
  • Demonstrated examples of automating design processes in SolidWorks, including configuring models for multiple variations and options.
  • Experience working with large product portfolios or high-SKU environments.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with application engineering, product engineering, and quality teams.
  • Ability to document processes and maintain clear, organized engineering records and references.

Work Environment

The role is based in a new, modern building that includes a very nice office space and a large warehouse currently operating at about half capacity. You will join a small but growing engineering team, currently around five members with plans to double in size in the near term. The environment includes application engineering, product engineering, and a quality team equipped with CMM capabilities. The company manages a large catalog of approximately 100,000 SKUs and operates multiple U.S. distribution centers, supporting a broad range of industries and automation applications. The culture is laid-back and supportive, with a strong emphasis on good work–life balance, schedule flexibility, and the potential for a hybrid work arrangement. The organization is privately held and in a growth phase under new leadership, with active investment in engineering capabilities and ongoing acquisitions to expand its bearing and power transmission solutions portfolio. You will work primarily with SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, and related configuration tools in a collaborative, technology-driven setting.
