Job Description:
Summary
The Director of Physician Compensation is responsible for the strategic design, implementation, evaluation, and governance of physician compensation programs across Ballad Health Medical Associates (BHMA). This senior leadership role ensures that compensation models align with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, financial sustainability, market competitiveness, and physician engagement. The Director collaborates closely with Legal, Finance, HR, Compliance, and physician leadership while reporting to the Chief Operations Officer for BHMA.
Strategic Leadership & Model Design
• Design and implement compensation models that promote equity, transparency, and financial sustainability.
• Align compensation programs with organizational strategy, value-based care models, and growth initiatives.
• Conduct compensation modeling and forecasting to evaluate long-term financial impact.
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
• Ensure compliance with FMV, Commercial Reasonableness, Stark Law, and Anti-Kickback Statute.
• Maintain comprehensive, audit-ready documentation for all compensation arrangements.
• Develop strong internal controls to support compliance, risk mitigation, and transparency.
Benchmarking & Market Analysis
• Conduct benchmarking using MGMA, AMGA, and SullivanCotter data.
• Recommend compensation structure adjustments based on market trends and regulatory changes.
• Monitor national and regional compensation trends.
Contracting & Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Collaborate with Legal, Finance, HR, and Operations to structure provider contracts.
• Ensure contracts reflect approved compensation plans and compliance standards.
• Support recruitment and retention through competitive compensation strategies.
Operational Oversight
• Lead the annual compensation cycle, including salary reviews, incentive calculations, and bonus distribution.
• Oversee accurate reporting of productivity metrics such as wRVUs and quality outcomes.
• Ensure timely communication of compensation results to physicians and leadership.
Education & Stakeholder Engagement
• Educate physician leaders and executives on compensation models and incentive structures.
• Translate complex compensation concepts into clear, understandable information.
• Foster trust, transparency, and consistent messaging across the organization. Team
Leadership
• Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
• Promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in business, Healthcare Management, Finance, or related field required.
• Master's degree (MBA, MHA, MPH, or related discipline) preferred.
Experience Requirements
• Minimum 7 years of experience in physician/provider compensation, healthcare finance, or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience required.
• Experience in a multi-specialty medical group or hospital-based provider environment strongly preferred.
License/Certifications:
No license required. Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or similar credential preferred
