The Contracting Engineering Co-Op will support the design, implementation, and optimization of building systems, including HVAC, chilled water, hot water, steam plant, and Building Automation Systems (BAS). Through hands-on project involvement, the co-op will develop technical skills in system design, controls installation, programming, commissioning, and process improvement.

This position reports directly to the Contracting Engineering Director, who will assign project responsibilities and provide mentorship throughout the co-op experience. Additional duties related to contracting engineering, controls systems, and special projects may be assigned based on business needs and the discretion of the Contracting Engineering Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop a foundational understanding of building systems design, including HVAC, chilled water, hot water, steam plant, and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Learn and apply basic engineering design principles, including equipment selection and specification, control flow diagram development, device selection, wiring design, and sequence of operations creation.
  • Assist in the development of complete project design drawings utilizing AutoCAD, Visio, and other engineering software tools.

Gain exposure to building load calculations, pipe and duct sizing, electrical power and control system design, material specifications, BACnet and Modbus protocols, and network communications.

  • Shadow Engineers and Field Technicians in both office and jobsite environments to gain practical experience in system design, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in controller and system supervisor programming activities to develop a basic understanding of automation system configuration and operation.

Support the development and maintenance of standard work practices, design details, templates, engineering standards, and technical reference materials.

  • Assist project teams with engineering documentation, submittals, and project-related deliverables.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned by the Contracting Engineering Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Actively obtaining an Engineering degree (BSME or BSEE).

  • Understanding of basic engineering design, low/medium voltage circuit design, and controls programming.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Teams) required. Experience utilizing CAD design software(AutoCAD, Revit) preferred. Experience with load and energy analysis tools (Trane TRACE 700, TRACE 3D Plus, System Analyzer, Chiller Plant Analyzer, Elite Software) a plus - not required.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND AFFILIATIONS: This position entails continual learning of current, legacy, and future building system design (i.e. HVAC, chilled water, hot water, and steam plant systems), as well as automation systems (BAS) design, installation, and programming.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and compose technical information. Ability to convey complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner that can be understood by individuals without knowledge or experience in building system design (i.e. HVAC, chilled water, hot water, and steam plant systems), as well as automation systems (BAS) design, installation and programming .

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert in all units of measure.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract, and concrete variables.
