Profile
We are seeking a Maintenance Director who can create and execute a comprehensive vision for our maintenance team. This role requires a leader who can effectively delegate tasks and responsibilities to maintenance supervisors, ensuring a positive and efficient working environment. The Maintenance Director will uphold strict adherence to OSHA guidelines and other regulations while demonstrating exceptional problem-solving and team-building skills.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Leadership and Management:
    • Develop and promote a diverse, inclusive, positive, respectful, and healthy work environment.
    • Offer professional, personal, and technical development opportunities, including continuous learning and mentoring.
    • Establish and enforce operational safety policies and procedures to prevent incidents and ensure compliance with OSHA requirements.
    • Provide leadership in developing company policies and programs to enhance safety awareness and meet OSHA standards.
    • Administer all planned maintenance programs, including safety hazards training, OSHA regulations, and environmental considerations.
    • Partner with Safety, Risk, and Continuous Improvement teams to implement process improvements, ensuring compliance and operational excellence.
    • Adhere to preventive maintenance principles and quality management standards.
  • Regulatory and Compliance:
    • Extensive knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws related to maintenance.
    • Ensure compliance with labor management policies and procedures.
    • Ability to interact and communicate with public officials and all levels of staff, including managers, supervisors, and intra-department personnel.
    • Demonstrate considerable knowledge of bus maintenance principles, procedures, and policies.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with teams, colleagues, the public, medical and governmental agencies, elected officials, and the board of trustees.
  • Operational Oversight:
    • Provide oversight, direction, and coordination of staff to deliver cost-effective, efficient, and reliable transit services within available resources.
    • Exhibit impeccable judgment and make sound decisions in a fast-paced, dynamic setting.
    • Demonstrate executive-level presentation skills and handle high-level client interactions.
    • Display strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and negotiating skills.
    • Track expenses and oversee the maintenance budget to ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Essential Functions / Process Responsibilities:
    • Administer and supervise the implementation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program.
    • Manage the equipment and facility maintenance repair division.
    • Prepare operating and capital budgets and control expenditures of allocated funds.
    • Evaluate work methods, policies, procedures, and services to determine effectiveness.
    • Review daily reports filed by all maintenance employees.
    • Develop various procedures and policies related to maintenance operations.
    • Meet regularly with Safety and Training officers to review projects and programs.
    • Collaborate with Authority Directors to develop, implement, and support existing programs.
    • Engage with local, state, and federal agencies regarding maintenance-related projects.
    • Represent the department on the labor/management committee.
    • Negotiate with vendors to resolve warranty issues and recover associated funds.
    • Manage contractual services to maintain vehicles, systems, and facilities.
    • Make presentations on maintenance-related topics to various groups.
    • Review and recommend capital expenditures to enhance departmental efficiency and services.
    • Oversee department inventories and stock controls.
    • Track trends using historical data and implement strategies to reduce service issues.
    • Respond to after-hour emergencies as needed
    • Work with all company and local team members to create a strong, vibrant, and engaging safety culture.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in coordinating transit safety, service delivery, field operations, staff development, and collective bargaining negotiation skills, particularly in a union environment.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations (EPA, OSHA, DOT, ADA, and EEOC).
  • Requirements:
        • 10+ years of experience, extensive leadership experience
        • Experience managing a maintenance department in transportation, experience in a fixed route services
        • Experience managing battery electric and hybrid electric fleets
        • Union environment experience
        • Experience leading a large fleet transformation
