Job description

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Pipeline Integrity Management Engineer for pipeline integrity, regulatory compliance, and asset management programs for clients across North America. This role offers an opportunity to grow technical expertise in pipeline integrity management, risk assessment, corrosion control, and regulatory compliance while working alongside experienced engineers and industry leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

Integrity Management Support

  • Assist in developing and maintaining Integrity Management Programs (IMPs) for gas and liquid pipelines per 49 CFR Part 192 Subpart O and ASME B31.8S.
  • Support risk assessment activities, including data collection, threat identification, and model updates.
  • Contribute to periodic IMP audits and performance reviews under the direction of senior engineers.
  • Assist in preparing integrity documentation for PHMSA and state regulatory reviews.

Pipeline Integrity Assessments & Engineering

  • Perform engineering analyses related to MAOP validation, pipeline records review, class location studies, and HCA/MCA identification.
  • Support In-Line Inspection (ILI) project execution: data review, tool selection, field coordination, and anomaly analysis.
  • Participate in hydrostatic testing, direct assessments, and corrosion evaluation activities.
  • Assist with integrity data management and integration with GIS systems for decision-making.

Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

  • Support compliance activities under PHMSA Mega Rule requirements, including TVC records management and MAOP reconfirmation.
  • Assist with the preparation of procedures, reports, and technical documentation for regulatory audits and client deliverables.
  • Maintain familiarity with 49 CFR Parts 192 & 195, ASME B31.8, API 1160, and related standards.

Project Coordination & Collaboration

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (operations, environmental, regulatory, GIS, and field services).
  • Assist in developing project execution plans, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Support project managers and senior engineers with client communications, presentations, and deliverables.

Professional Development

  • Participate in on-the-job training, mentoring, and continuing education to expand technical knowledge.
  • Engage actively in Burns & McDonnell's culture of employee ownership, taking initiative, and accountability for project success.
  • Pursue opportunities for growth into leadership, technical specialization, or project management as experience develops.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or civil engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 3 years of pipeline engineering experience required. Consulting preferred. 
  • Or Bachelor's degree in mechanical or civil engineering technology or related degree from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of pipeline engineering experience required. Consulting preferred. 
  • Or Master's degree in mechanical or civil engineering and 2 years of pipeline engineering experience required. Consulting preferred. 

Technical Skills

  • Foundational knowledge of pipeline materials, corrosion mechanisms, and pressure systems. Familiarity with pipeline codes and standards (49 CFR Parts 192 & 195, ASME B31.8, API 1160, NACE SP0169/SP0502).
  • Experience with GIS, ILI data, or risk modeling software is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with engineering data tools is a plus.

Certifications (Preferred but Not Required)

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or equivalent certification.
  • NACE CP1 or related corrosion training is a plus.
  • Ability to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure with guidance.
