What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Performance Engineering, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Performance Engineering, you need deep expertise in software performance optimization, systems architecture, and a strong background in computer science or a related field, often with advanced degrees or equivalent experience. Familiarity with performance testing tools (such as JMeter, LoadRunner), monitoring platforms (like New Relic, Dynatrace), and cloud infrastructure is typically required, along with certifications in relevant technologies. Exceptional leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic problem-solving abilities make candidates stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for driving high-performing teams, ensuring system reliability, and delivering scalable solutions that support business objectives.

How does a Director of Performance Engineering typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive system optimization?

A Director of Performance Engineering frequently works closely with software development, operations, and product teams to identify performance bottlenecks and implement solutions. They lead performance reviews, set benchmarks, and coordinate testing strategies to ensure systems meet business requirements. Regular communication and joint troubleshooting sessions are common, as the role requires balancing technical needs with business priorities. This collaborative approach helps ensure that performance goals are aligned across the organization and that issues are resolved efficiently.

What does a Director of Performance Engineering do?

A Director of Performance Engineering leads teams responsible for ensuring that software, systems, or applications perform optimally and efficiently at scale. They set performance goals, develop testing strategies, and oversee the identification and resolution of bottlenecks. This role involves collaborating with engineering, operations, and product teams to build robust, high-performing solutions. Additionally, they provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and define best practices for performance testing and monitoring.

2000 16th St, Denver, Colorado, 80202-5117, United States of America
Director, Performance & Capability Design
Location: Denver, CO (Hybrid)
The Opportunity
We are transforming how DaVita builds workforce capability. We are moving beyond traditional training design to build a Performance & Capability Design function that solves business problems by addressing the holistic ecosystem of tools, processes, environment, and skills.
We are seeking a Director of Performance & Capability Design to lead this transformation. This is not a traditional Learning & Development role; it is a strategic business leadership role. You will own the strategy and lead large-scale projects for diagnosing and resolving the organization's most complex human performance challenges. You will lead an internal consulting team to architect systemic solutions that directly impact our clinical and business outcomes.
An ideal candidate will be highly proficient in leading human performance consulting projects with a proven track record in designing enterprise-wide capability development and large-scale change implementation.
Your Impact
As a key member of the leadership team, you will:
  • Own the Performance Strategy: Shift the organization from "order-taking" to "value-creating" by aligning enablement initiatives with DaVita's highest-priority business goals.
  • Drive Business Results: Move beyond transactional learning metrics (completion/satisfaction) to transformational business and leadership metrics (clinical and business performance outcomes, leadership bench strength, pipeline readiness, and retention of high-potentials).
  • Lead Systemic Change: Partner with senior executives to identify when a "training problem" is actually a process, technology, or environment problem and influence cross-functionally to drive solutions across those domains.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Enterprise Performance Strategy
  • Set the Vision: Define and execute the long-term roadmap for Performance & Capability Enablement at DaVita, transitioning the capability from content production to performance consulting and strategic problem solving.
  • Executive Partnership: Serve as a strategic advisor to VP and C-level leaders in Operational and Clinical priorities. Translate their business strategy into workforce capability requirements.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Institutionalize performance analysis methods (light to high touch) to ensure we are solving the right problems, not just treating symptoms. Establish a measurement framework that links enablement activities to tangible ROI and business KPIs. Use data to prioritize high-impact initiatives and deprioritize low-value requests.

Architecting Solutions & Ecosystems
  • Holistic Solution Design: Lead the design and facilitate workshops to architect multi-disciplinary performance support and capability development systems that integrate workflow support, process re-engineering, technology adoption, and skill-building.
  • Drive Strategic Initiatives: Lead from the front on large-scale, high-complexity consulting projects. Align business, technology, and delivery lanes to implement behavioral changes that enable critical performance outcomes and advance multi-year strategies.
  • Technology & Innovation: Partner with the Technology and Product teams to ensure our tools and platforms inherently enable performance, reducing the cognitive load on our teammates.

Organizational Leadership & Team Development
  • Leadership: Build, mentor, and lead a team of Performance architects. Transform their capabilities from instructional design to performance engineering and business consulting.
  • Change Management: Drive the internal change management required to shift stakeholder expectations from "requesting training" to "partnering on performance."
  • Operational Excellence: Oversee the portfolio of high-stakes enablement projects, ensuring resource allocation aligns with enterprise value.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Strategic Experience: 8+ years of progressive leadership experience in Performance Improvement, Organizational Effectiveness, Strategy Consulting, or L&D.
  • Performance Mindset: Proficiency in Human Performance Technology (HPT) or similar methodologies. You view "training" as just one lever in a broader toolkit that includes process, tools, and environment.
  • Business Acumen: Demonstrated ability to speak the language of the business (operations, finance, clinical metrics) and connect performance strategies to the P&L. Highly proficient in building presentation decks that clearly visualize data and drive effective decision-making.
  • Transformation Leadership: Proven track record of leading teams through functional transformations (e.g., shifting from production to strategy).
  • Executive Presence: Ability to challenge senior stakeholders constructively, negotiate priorities, and influence without direct authority.
  • Based in Denver, CO (in-office downtown T, W, flex 3rd day)
  • Travel required: up to 20%

Here is what you can expect when you join our Village:
  • A "community first, company second" culture based on Core Values that really matter
  • Clinical outcomes consistently ranked above the national average
  • Award-winning education and training across multiple career paths to help you reach your potential
  • Performance-based rewards based on stellar individual and team contributions
  • A comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance your health, your financial well-being and your future

What We'll Provide:
More than just pay, our DaVita Rewards package connects teammates to what matters most. Teammates are eligible to begin receiving benefits on the first day of the month following or coinciding with one month of continuous employment. Below are some of our benefit offerings.
  • Comprehensive benefits: Medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match, paid time off, PTO cash out
  • Support for you and your family: Family resources, EAP counseling sessions, access Headspace®, backup child and elder care, maternity/paternity leave and more
  • Professional development programs: DaVita offers a variety of programs to help strong performers grow within their career and also offers on-demand virtual leadership and development courses through DaVita's online training platform StarLearning.

At DaVita, we strive to be a community first and a company second. We want all teammates to experience DaVita as "a place where I belong."
