Job description

Overview:

The Operations Manager (Renewables) is responsible for the safe execution and performance of the electrical scope on solar projects and operating sites. This role leads electrical planning, field supervision, testing and commissioning support, and coordination with utilities and stakeholders to ensure code-compliant installations, reliable energization, and safe operations of PV, DC collection, inverters, MV collection, substations, and interconnection equipment. The position emphasizes strong electrical safety leadership, quality control, schedule adherence, and documentation.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Develops comprehensive Plans and managing project portfolios
  • Aligns all activities with project strategy, goals to maintain progress and Quality
  • Overseeing the planning and implementation of an entire project through budgeting, hiring team members, sourcing suppliers, and planning the project release.
  • Manage coordination between various teams and stakeholders, swiftly resolving any conflicts or issues to maintain smooth project execution
  • Manages a team of Project Managers and operational staff within the projects.
  • Oversees training, development, and performance evaluation of staff to ensure a skilled and effective workforce.
  • Implement policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
  • Works with Manpower lead to insure proper staffing on all Renewable projects.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead electrical execution for solar PV projects/sites, including DC collection, inverters, MV collection systems, substation/interconnection scope, and related balance-of-plant.
  • Plan and coordinate electrical outages, switching, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) to minimize risk and production impact; ensure energized work controls are followed.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC/NFPA 70E, utility interconnection requirements, permits, and company electrical safety standards; conduct JHAs and field audits.
  • Direct electrical troubleshooting and corrective maintenance for inverters, combiner boxes, trackers (power/controls), MV equipment, relays, and communication networks; coordinate OEM support as needed.
  • Own electrical quality and verification activities: insulation resistance (megger), torque/termination verification, grounding checks, continuity, functional checks, inverter start-up support, and punch-list closeout.
  • Coordinate testing and commissioning activities, including MV cable testing, transformer testing, relay settings verification, SCADA/communications checkout, and utility witness testing.
  • Monitor and improve electrical performance using SCADA and field data; investigate alarms, trips, and underperformance and drive root-cause and corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate electrical documentation (as-builts/redlines, one-lines, test reports, commissioning records) and manage work orders, spares, and warranty/RMA tracking in the CMMS.

The person in this role will uphold the culture of J.F. Electric, including relationship building with customers as well as general behavior on J.F. Electric or client premises or at J.F. Electric sponsored events.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in electrical construction, commissioning, or O&M (solar preferred), including DC systems, inverters, and MV distribution/interconnection equipment.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC and NFPA 70E; experience applying LOTO, switching procedures, and electrical safe work practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead field crews and contractors, interpret one-lines/schematics, and troubleshoot electrical and controls/communications issues.
  • Proficiency with SCADA/monitoring tools and CMMS/work order systems; comfortable producing clear reports and maintaining test/commissioning documentation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform regular site inspections in outdoor environments, including walking on uneven terrain, standing for extended periods, climbing ladders/stairs, and accessing equipment enclosures.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, FR clothing as applicable, gloves, fall protection) and safely work around energized electrical equipment in accordance with site procedures.

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel to projects, industry conferences, training sessions, and meetings with corporate, regulatory, and vendor representatives.
