Job Summary


The Director of Engineering for Telematics Hardware and Embedded Software is responsible for the design, development, and lifecycle management of telematics hardware and embedded software systems. The Director of Engineering manages internal and external engineering teams responsible for hardware development, embedded firmware, and device platform architecture used in connected equipment and vehicle telemetry solutions. The Director of Engineering ensures reliable, scalable, and cost-effective device platforms while coordinating closely with product management, operations, and outsourced manufacturing and engineering partners.


Key Responsibilities


The primary duties include:

  • Lead development of telematics platforms including cellular, GPS, sensor interfaces, and power management systems and embedded software and firmware.
  • Manage the full product development lifecycle from concept through production and field deployment and
  • Manage contract manufacturers, suppliers, and logistics partners to ensure timely production and delivery of telematics hardware and coordinate with outsourced manufacturing partners to ensure design for manufacturability, design for test, and production quality.
  • Establish and maintain engineering processes for design reviews, documentation, testing, and release management and implement metrics to track development timing, product reliability, and productivity.
  • Define system architecture for telematics devices including communications, data processing, over-the-air updates, and security.
  • Oversee device certification efforts including cellular, FCC, carrier approvals, and environmental compliance.
  • Ensure devices meet quality and reliability requirements and standards.
  • Lead and mentor multidisciplinary engineering teams including hardware, embedded software, and systems engineers.
  • Work with operations and supply chain to manage component selection, cost targets, and lifecycle risks.
  • Collaborate with product management to translate market requirements into technical specifications and development roadmaps.
  • Support customer deployments by assisting with technical troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of field issues.


Requirements


  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field. Masters degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in embedded systems and hardware product development.
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams.
  • Experience developing connected devices, telematics systems, cloud-connected IoT platforms.
  • Experience with wireless technologies such as LTE, LTE-M, NB-IoT, WiFi, or Bluetooth.
  • Experience bringing hardware products from concept through production.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers.
  • Experience designing ruggedized or automotive-grade electronics.
  • Experience with certification processes (FCC, PTCRB, EE, carrier certification).
  • Familiarity with GPS/GNSS systems and vehicle or equipment interfaces (CAN, OBDII, J1939, sensor I/O).
  • Knowledge of OTA update frameworks and device security architecture.

Compensation and Benefits


  • Salary: $188,000 - $213,000
  • Performance Bonus: Eligible for a quarterly bonus of up to 20%, bringing the total compensation range to $225,600-$255,000.
