Summary

Wayland is an independent, coed college preparatory school for boarding and day students (grades 9-post-graduate), founded in 1855. The school’s rich, rigorous academic program features exceptionally small classes, capstone projects at every grade, active STEAM, media studies, environmental science, and student success program, and an array of AP offerings. The diverse and welcoming school community brings together students from across the United States and more than 25 other countries in an intimate learning environment, with a student-faculty ratio of 6:1. Wayland’s historic campus is located in the heart of the Midwest in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin—just 40 miles from Madison and 60 miles from Milwaukee.

Essential Functions

The Assistant Director of Athletics serves as an integral member of our vibrant, educational community. Working directly with students to teach, coach, engage, and inspire, the Assistant Director lives on campus, makes a difference in the lives of students and faculty while gaining invaluable experience and responsibilities in education, athletics, and leadership. Essential functions for this role include:

Athletics

  • Support the Director of Athletics in all facets of the program as needed and directed
  • Coach two athletic seasons
  • Serve as Acting Athletic Director when needed
  • Enter invoices for officials and entry fees into Expense Management
  • Assist with athletic scheduling as needed
  • Record attendance for early athletic dismissals in Blackbaud
  • Game management

Dean of Students

  • Live in a dorm and serve as dorm supervisor
  • Lead a Mentor group of 5-8 students per semester
  • Support the Dean of Students Office to manage Student Activities including planning, leading, and facilitating weekend activities, transportation, trips and functions, student volunteers, scheduling, assigning chaperones, campus competitions, pep rallies, and events
  • Serving as the club advisor for Student Activities Club, organize club fairs, help students plan and lead co-curricular and extra-curricular activities as part of weekends, clubs, and events
  • Working with the Dean of Students Office and the Advancement Office to plan major on-campus student activities (Orientation, Homecoming Spirit Week, Homecoming Dance, Snowball Dance, Connection Weekends, Prom, etc.)
  • Supporting the Academic Office when able with Attendance initiatives

Wayland Academy expects the Assistant Director of Athletics to be fully engaged in the school's life and mission, in and out of the classroom. To that end, the Assistant Director is expected to take meals in the dining hall, participate in Wayland Academy community events and to, in general, be a positive role model for students.

Travel Required

  • Traveling with and for students for academic, extracurricular and residential life functions is a regular duty of the Assistant Director.
  • Occasional overnight and out-of-state travel for school-related business may be assigned.
  • Unless otherwise explicitly agreed upon by the Head of School, the Assistant Director must have a valid driver’s license, three years of US driving experience upon hire, and maintain the motor vehicle records standards as set forth by the employee handbook.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience leading, coaching, mentoring, supervising, or developing individuals in an educational, athletic, youth-serving, or professional setting

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree or other advanced degree
  • Experience (and/or desire) working at a residential school, college, or program camp, as a tutor or peer counselor, and/or as a teacher

Work Authorization

  • Employee must be authorized to work in the United States of America.
  • Employee must provide identification documentation, provide a list of all states/countries of residence over the past seven years, and pass a comprehensive consumer background check (criminal, department of motor vehicle, credit, and others as needed) prior to employment.
