Job description

Courier Health is on a mission to solve one of the biggest and most meaningful opportunities in healthcare: reinvent how people living with chronic and rare diseases are supported.
We are building the future of patient engagement for life sciences companies. Our software is leveraged by biopharma companies to support patients in their complex journey from diagnosis to initiating and remaining on therapy to achieve optimal health outcomes.
Come Build with Us
Courier Health is a New York City-based technology company on a mission to improve the patient experience for hundreds of millions of people living with a chronic condition or rare disease. The company develops and delivers the fastest-growing patient experience solution for the life sciences industry.
Companies that choose Courier Health are achieving double-digit improvements to patient starts, time-to-start and ongoing adherence to life-altering therapies. As host of the invite-only Patient Innovators Summit and publisher of The State of Patient-Centricity in Biopharma report, Courier Health is backed by leading investors, including Oak HC/FT, Norwest and Work-Bench.
This role is based out of our New York City Office. We're an office-first company that values in-person collaboration 4 days per week, while also providing flexibility as needed. If you're scrappy, resourceful, and excited to help build a world-class team we'd love to meet you!
The Opportunity
As Director of Legal, you will be Courier Health's first dedicated legal hire, reporting directly to the CFO. You will build the legal infrastructure that lets a high-growth Series B company operate smoothly and serve as a trusted strategic resource for leadership.
What You'll Build
Legal infrastructure that scales. Evaluate, strengthen, and expand the frameworks, templates, and processes that let Courier Health manage its legal affairs without slowing down. From commercial agreements to data processing addenda, you would ensure that the right structures exist and that they're adopted by teams.
Cross-functional partnership. Partnering across the organization to help navigate key decisions. You will be asked to be present, practical and decisive, setting up legal to be an accelerant, not a bottleneck, to decision-making.
Strategic risk judgment. Serve as a sounding board for the CFO and executive team on legal risk across the business. Flag what matters, contextualize what doesn't, and help leadership make confident decisions with the information they need.
Rigorous oversight of compliance and regulatory risk. Courier Health handles sensitive patient data on behalf of the world's leading biopharma companies, and we take that responsibility seriously. You will be accountable for ensuring the right legal and compliance frameworks are in place, working closely with specialized outside counsel on HIPAA and data privacy matters, and ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks.
Legal process that runs at scale. Design how legal work flows at Courier Health: intake, triage, turnaround expectations, and escalation paths. Build systems that keep legal proactive, and not reactive.
What Makes You Successful
  • 8-12+ years of legal experience, ideally including meaningful time in-house at a technology or healthcare technology company
  • J.D. from an accredited law school; licensed to practice law in New York or another U.S. jurisdiction
  • Deep experience reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts: SaaS SOWs, MSAs, BAAs, vendor agreements, and partnership structures
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare data privacy: fluent enough to spot issues, ask the right questions, and know when to bring in specialized outside counsel
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and making sound risk calls without perfect information or a full playbook
  • Ability to make complex legal concepts clear and actionable for non-legal stakeholders at every level of the organization
  • A builder's mentality: you like creating systems and processes, not just reviewing individual documents
  • Track record of being trusted by cross-functional partner
  • Strong executive presence and comfort presenting to and advising senior leadership

Bonus points if you have:
  • Experience in life sciences, pharmaceutical, or digital health environments
  • Familiarity with state privacy law (CCPA, CPRA) and evolving AI/data governance frameworks
  • Experience supporting fundraising rounds, equity management, or board governance
  • Prior experience as a company's first or sole in-house counsel
Benefits
  • 100% paid employee health benefit options (including medical, dental, and vision)
  • 401(k) with employer funded match
  • Unlimited Vacation
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Paid parental leave
  • Catered lunch on Fridays
  • Wellness stipend
Compensation
The annual salary range for the target level for this role is $190,000 - $240,000 + equity + benefits, including medical, dental, and vision. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including relevant experience, interview performance, and internal equity.
