Job description
Position Summary
Teaching Matters is a national nonprofit organization, headquartered in New York City, with the mission to close the opportunity gap of a radically unequal education system for underserved and historically marginalized children. From states and districts to schools and classrooms, we partner to help teachers and school leaders develop the skills they need to teach well, lead their peers and drive school-wide improvement.
The Associate Director of Impact & Evaluation will serve as a core member of the Strategy team, helping to tell the story of Teaching Matters' impact across school systems and communities working to strengthen instructional coherence, leadership capacity, teacher practice, and student outcomes. This individual will help translate the complexity of system-level instructional improvement into clear, compelling evidence of impact for educators, district leaders, funders, and national partners. The Associate Director of Impact & Evaluation will also oversee the operational aspects of data management and research infrastructure, helping position Teaching Matters for larger-scale research partnerships, federal grant opportunities, and other long-term evaluation efforts.
This position will lead the development and implementation of systems for measuring organizational impact across classrooms, schools, and districts. Because the work of instructional improvement is deeply relational, long-term, and often difficult to quantify, this role will be responsible for leveraging existing qualitative and quantitative data while building more streamlined and sustainable evaluation systems moving forward. This work will help Teaching Matters better demonstrate its impact, elevate proof points, and inform strategic growth and continuous improvement efforts nationally.
The ideal candidate believes deeply in diversity, equity, and inclusion for all people and is passionate about improving the quality of learning for students. This individual should possess a strong work ethic and the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively. The ideal candidate will also be highly organized, flexible, and able to effectively manage multiple priorities; demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; and be proficient in tools such asTableau, R, SQL, or other relevant data analysis and visualization platforms.
The ideal applicant for the position will have (1) experience in program evaluation and/or nonprofit or government impact measurement (2) have a strong understanding of monitoring and evaluation methodologies involving both quantitative and qualitative data, and (3) have familiarity in designing and executing common data collection methods, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and experiments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Works closely with the CEO, the Vice Presidents of Programs, Strategy and Development to develop effective long-term strategies for how data and evidence may support the organization's overall mission and vision.
- Manage the organizational strategy for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of our data collection systems in order to achieve our mission and strategic plan performance measures
- Plan and operationalize higher-touch methods for collecting feedback and data, including, but not limited to, interviews, surveys, focus groups, and case studies.
- Present data analysis and periodic reporting in consultation with Strategy, Programs, Communications and Development staff.
- Ensure that lessons learned throughout projects are captured and communicated to internal stakeholders throughout the organization.
- Collaborates with the Programs team through periodic school site visits to better understand implementation, support continuous improvement efforts, and help ensure alignment to Teaching Matters' quality standards.
- Contribute to design, launch and implementation of new services and programs in collaboration with program staff and leadership. Work with the operations managers to provide formative support as well as the evaluation of short, and longer-term results of programs.
- Review and synthesize academic literature on best practices relating to Teaching Matters' goals. Monitor competitors, research, product innovation as they relate to student outcomes and research student outcomes and needs that are local and national.
- Draft or assist in the drafting of press releases, policy briefs, blog posts, op-eds, annual reports, public comment letters, grant reports, or any other written deliverables involving how the organization presents its impact and outcome.
- Support board subcommittees for evaluation, preparing all needed materials and reports, including leading such presentations and communications to the board.
- Address any other tasks assigned by the Vice President of Strategy and the CEO.
- Supervise all sub-contractors and vendors involved in research and evaluation activities when applicable.
Reporting Relationships
- This position does not have any full-time staff directly reporting to them. However, the role will work closely with and receive support from three Operations Managers who will help facilitate the systems, coordination, and data collection needs associated with this work.
