Job Summary:

The Department of Facilities Management and Development at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Coordinator of Field Services / Deputy Director of Design and Construction. The successful candidate will:

  • Be responsible for providing architectural engineering design services, field troubleshooting, providing state and local code interpretation to staff for Downstate Health Sciences University.
  • Prepare design contract documents such as drawings, specifications, and equipment selection for construction and renovation projects.
  • Work with Director of Design and Construction to establish and develop departmental plans for major alterations and system modifications to existing facilities, provide program requirements and preliminary designs for use by outside architectural and engineering consultants including State University Construction Fund.
  • Recommend alterations and assist the Director of Design and Construction to prepare economic analysis and feasibility studies when required.
  • Manage supervisory managers who works as facilities project managers involved in the day to day planning and design.
  • Provide leadership and communication, quality assessment, review of budgeting with regards to renovations or new construction.
  • Prepare cost estimates such as budgetary, preliminary cost estimates including architectural, electrical, HVAC, plumbing equipment replacements and modifications to existing systems and renovations. The cost estimates will be used for Capital Budget preparation, Contracts, and estimating available in-house material and personnel resources.
  • Act as construction superintendent and sign off on the acceptance of contract comments including all other disciplines.
  • Support senior level managers, supervise and support activities of the architectural and engineering staff.
  • Work with facility project managers regarding efficiency and use of building products in renovations or new construction. Working towards the greater use of "GREEN" sustainable products and cost-efficient products.
  • Assist the Director of Design and Construction to furnish technical engineering advice to the VP of Facilities Operations and on interpreting record drawings and analyzing field conditions.
  • Attend job meeting on construction projects and represent the Director of Design and Construction when necessary and/or required.
  • Assist the Director of Design and Construction on all projects, tasks as required. Supervise draftspersons, designers, or estimators as required.
  • Perform special activities as directed by the Director of Design and Construction.
  • Act as the Director of Design and Construction, performing all duties, during Director's absence and when requested and/or required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and/or Engineering.
  • 10 to 15 years of work experience in design and construction, preferably in Hospital and/or Academic environment.
  • New York State Code Enforcement Officer certification and/or Licensed Professional. If successful incumbent does not have certification, they must obtain Certification within one (1) year of employment start date.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft Project, familiar with facilities management software, and AutoCAD.
  • Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
