Job description

POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES
Works under the direct supervision of the Trauma Registry Supervisor and Director of Trauma Services. Identifies, abstracts and enters patients into Trauma Registry. Assigns ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient visits. Uses principles of coding endorsed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and Texas Trauma System. Promotes the Health System's guest relations policy.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Formalized education and training through an accredited coding program is required with completion within 18 months of employment. Five years of more experience in an American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified trauma center can substitute for formal education. Certification as Registered Health Information Technician or Certified Coding Specialist preferred. Knowledge of regulatory requirements preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products as preferred.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Valid certification offered by one of the following credentialing bodies is required within 18 months from the start of employment: American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
