Director Mass Spectrometry information

What is a director mass spectrometry?

A Director of Mass Spectrometry oversees the operation, development, and strategic direction of mass spectrometry laboratories in research, pharmaceutical, or analytical settings. They manage teams, ensure quality control, and optimize workflows for analyzing complex chemical and biological samples. Additionally, they collaborate with scientists, guide method development, and stay updated on advancements in mass spectrometry technology. Their role is crucial in maintaining high analytical standards and driving innovation in analytical sciences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a director mass spectrometry?

A Director of Mass Spectrometry should possess advanced expertise in analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry instrumentation, and laboratory management, typically supported by a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a related field. Familiarity with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry platforms, data analysis software, and regulatory compliance frameworks is vital, as are certifications in laboratory operations or quality systems. Excellent leadership, project management, and communication skills help drive high-performing teams and foster strong cross-functional collaboration. These capabilities ensure that the laboratory operates efficiently, produces reliable results, and meets organizational and regulatory standards.

What are some of the main challenges faced by a director mass spectrometry, and how do they impact day-to-day operations?

A key challenge for Directors in Mass Spectrometry roles is balancing oversight of highly specialized technical work with broader strategic and operational responsibilities. You will often need to manage resource allocation, stay current with evolving technologies, and ensure data quality and regulatory compliance within tight project timelines. The need to coordinate multiple complex projects and mentor a diverse team can also present daily administrative demands. Successfully navigating these challenges helps the laboratory meet its scientific objectives and deliver high-quality results to internal and external clients.

Job description

The W.M. Keck Biomedical Mass Spectrometry Lab - a part of the Biomolecular Analysis Facility Core at the University of Virginia - seeks a Senior Scientist to expand our work in the areas of proteomics and metabolomics using state-of-the-art instruments to support research within the institution in areas such as basic science research, the Cancer Center, and clinical projects. This position requires expertise and hands-on experience in biomedical science. The candidate should have documented expertise in mass spectrometry and chromatography as well as protein and small molecule chemistry. You will support the director through sample preparation, operation/maintenance of advanced mass spectrometers (Orbitrap ID-X - Vanquish Neo and Orbitrap Astral Zoom - Evosep Eno), and data analysis using advanced software packages (Proteome Discoverer, Compound Discoverer, Scaffold, etc). This work will advance institutional goals in proteomic and metabolomic profiling and translational research.
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of excellent communication and team support. You should be highly motivated and able to work independently when designing and executing experiments. The customer support of researchers within the institution is a high priority. Projects will include use of existing techniques to answer current biological challenges and the development of new technologies in proteomics and metabolomics.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctoral degree, preferably a Ph.D. in Mass Spectrometry or in a very closely related field.
  • Possess prior experience in qualitative and quantitative proteomics and metabolomics technology and nano-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS; on Orbitrap Fusion, Orbitrap Astral, and/or Orbitrap ID-X).
  • The candidate should be familiar with the entire metabolomics and/or proteomics pipeline (including sample preparation, LC and MS operation, and data analysis) and must be able to conduct independent projects.
  • Manage multiple projects between multiple laboratories.
  • Demonstrate scientific productivity and have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and ability to learn new technologies, flexibility and time management skills.
  • 5+ years' direct experience in mass spectrometry or a MS in very closely related field and 10+ years' experience in proteomics or metabolomics.
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines and engage investigators in project design, execution and data analysis.
  • Experience in publication and grant writing.
  • Experience with Proteome/Compound Discoverer, Scaffold, MS Dial, MetaboAnalyst, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of Thermo mass spectrometers - operation and maintenance.
