Job description

SCOPE

The Advanced Manufacturing Manager will be responsible for leading projects within Smith & Wesson to improve production efficiency, quality, cost, and safety through advanced manufacturing technologies, robotics, integration and process control. This role will lead the effort to research baseline data, create a project scope, present projects to integrators, evaluate project proposals, develop a project budget, submit budget for approval and implement project to completion. This position will need to communicate effectively and frequently with engineering, operations, IT, quality, outside integrators and other key stakeholders during any project to maintain alignment. The Advanced Manufacturing Team will use outside integrators to implement projects. This role needs to constantly evaluate the pool of integrators to ensure their knowledge will apply to upcoming implementations. If the integrator's knowledge is lacking, additional integrators will need to be found.

Salary range for this role will fall between $96,000-$150,000

TRAVEL

This position will be based out of our facility in Springfield, MA and will require travel to support other Smith & Wesson facilities during various projects. Travel is necessary to attend industry events to maintain expertise. Visiting integrators will be required to evaluate capabilities and perform status checks during projects. Travel will be more frequent when project implementation occurs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Provide key leadership in the development and implementation of advanced manufacturing projects and objectives
  • Work closely with engineering, IT, operations, outside integrators and other key disciplines to develop project goals and a project plan to meet those goals
  • Gather relevant business/process information to build a project scope and a baseline of ROI analysis on proposed projects
  • Generate and maintain list of projects to be evaluated and come up with an evaluation criterion for project prioritization
  • Work closely with operations and engineering team to identify areas where advanced manufacturing solutions would be a good fit and help develop a solution
  • Pull all data and information together to create capital equipment proposals (CEP) and draft a CEP for review and submission
  • Lead and support advanced manufacturing team project responsibilities in Houlton, Maryville and Springfield.
  • Ensure all projects support business Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost objectives
  • Challenge the current business condition by using "why" analysis to undercover the true reasons for current business processes and utilize that to find better manufacturing methods
  • Stay in tune with current manufacturing technologies through research, attending industry events and discussion with business partners

Competencies of the ideal candidate

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Business Administration (preferred)
  • 10 Years of Experience in Manufacturing Operations
  • Experience in Manufacturing Automation Implementation (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of metal cutting processes
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement techniques
  • Technical knowledge of machining, assembly, production planning
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others
  • Interpersonal and communication skills

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • Must have working command of the English language
  • Must be able to read, write and interpret the English language
  • Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (verbal instructions, written memos and instructions)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Works in an office environment.
  • Able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
  • Able to lift and move up to 30 pounds occasionally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.

The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:

  • Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor

The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
