The Digital Navigator provides patient navigation, health system education, and digital technology support to patients, parents (guardians), and families participating in an NIH-funded pediatric clinical research study evaluating telehealth-enabled Family-Centered Rounds (FCR) in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The Digital Navigator facilitates virtual FCR workflows for families in the clinical trial, which includes attending virtual FCR encounters to support families, troubleshooting issues in real-time, and advocating for FCR best practices. Using a patient- and family-centered approach, the Digital Navigator assists families in overcoming barriers to participation by assessing technology needs, providing digital literacy and equipment support, facilitating access to resources, coordinating intervention activities, identifying and addressing other needs to optimally engage in FCR, and support equitable participation in the study.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience with the following (but not limited to): databases, medical record systems, Microsoft Word, Excel, and associated software.
  • Experience working with pediatric patients and families.
  • Experience documenting interactions and maintaining accurate records using electronic systems.
  • Experience working at a hospital or university.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong digital literacy skills and the ability to learn and support telehealth technologies, mobile devices, and computer applications.
  • Ability to educate and support patients and families with varying levels of digital literacy.
  • Knowledge of patient- and family-centered care principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary clinical and research teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and provide compassionate, patient-centered support.
  • Experience working individually and as a team member in a diverse workforce.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful completion of the UC Davis Health Spanish Bilingual Skills Assessment Program.
  • Experience in patient navigation, patient advocacy, community health, healthcare, customer service, or similar patient-facing roles.
  • Experience supporting telehealth or digital health technologies.
  • Experience working in a healthcare or clinical research environment.
  • Experience educating families on telehealth technologies, mobile applications, and computer applications in a hospital setting.

Department Overview

The vision of the Department of Pediatrics is to support a healthy future for all children and families through outstanding patient care, transformative research, innovative medical education, and community-based advocacy. This position supports an NIH-funded clinical trial evaluating telehealth-enabled Family-Centered Rounds (FCR) to improve family engagement, family psychosocial outcomes, communication, and access to care for hospitalized children. The Digital Navigator works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, Health IT Education, research staff, community-based health organizations, and Patient and Provider Advisory Boards to support successful implementation of the intervention while promoting family-centered communication and equitable access to digital health technologies.
