About the Role:

Reporting to the VP, Marketing, this role will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to continue the OEGSE legacy of leadership, innovation and early adoption within the digital and social spaces. We are looking for an individual to ensure that the company’s mobile applications, websites and social channels are leveraging best in class practices while also demonstrating the curiosity and analytical perspective to introduce new technology and content strategies. This person will develop and oversee the deployment of this strategy while ensuring that it aligns with overall OEG revenue building goals, working with departmental leaders to leave no stones unturned and continue our internal ethos of collaboration and winning together. This person will also possess the acute ability to ensure that content is being deployed that maximizes fan engagement with our various brands while blending in revenue driving messaging seamlessly – all in the appropriate voice(s) of our varied brands.\

Your Focus in this Role:

  • Provide strategic direction & maximizes growth of all web, social & mobile channels for the Edmonton Oilers, Rogers Place and ICE District
  • Lead development for new Edmonton Oilers mobile application
  • Lead development of a content strategy for third party digital applications (ex. YouTube)
  • Serve as organizational lead for the adoption and implementation of new digital technology as relevant
  • Serve as content manager & assignment editor for EdmontonOilers.com editorial & video
  • Work with Manager, Digital Architecture to oversee development & day-to-day operation of EdmontonOilers.com & RogersPlace.com as well as corresponding mobile apps
  • Collaborate with Manager, Social Media on Oilers social media content & leads overall strategy
  • Evolve the mobile strategy for Oilers, Rogers Place & ICE District, including not only mobile apps but also ensuring the functionality & ease of use of OEG websites on mobile devices
  • Monitor daily website traffic & organizes content in order to maximize traffic based on fan behaviors
  • Serve as managing editor for all publications, primarily Oil Country Magazine
  • Set appropriate context and prescribed limits for direct reports:
    • Organization framework (e.g. vision, goals, values)
    • Business plans and work plans (e.g. strategic positioning, operational and resource plans)
    • Organization limits (e.g. legal, fiscal, and policy limits)
    • Manager’s personal limits (e.g. hear bad news early and directly, not from others).
  • Ensure the application of OEG’s safety practices, policies and procedures by all direct reports.
  • Specify the outputs or results expected (e.g. work quantity, quality, and timelines). This includes both current work and improving work processes and methods.
  • Provide inputs and/or resources required e.g. people (time & expertise), money (capital & operating budget, and technology and connect to results expected.
  • Delegate appropriate authority to direct reports to do required work.
  • Be accountable for the output/results of direct reports.
  • Support direct reports in using judgement and initiative in doing work.
  • Add value to the work of direct reports.
  • Provide feedback and coach direct reports to improve their effectiveness; invoke performance improvement plans, if necessary.
  • Assess personal effectiveness of direct reports and recommend merit increases.
  • Develop talent - provide appropriate development opportunities to direct reports.

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma from a recognized institution in a related field
  • A minimum of five years of experience within the sports and/or live entertainment sectors, ideally with direct club experience
  • Deep knowledge of the game of hockey, including rules and terminology
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate hockey games clearly and effectively
  • Working knowledge of web design and mobile application tools
  • Working knowledge of social media tools
  • Working knowledge of graphic design tools
  • Solid knowledge of digital marketing (social media, display, SEM, etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent writing ability with proofreading and grammatical skills
  • Proven ability to make critical decisions independently without supervision
  • Track record of building strong working relationships through effective communication, managing expectations, and conflict management
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
  • Proactive and resourceful with an ability to “make things happen”
  • Good balance of creative/communications instincts and logical, analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines while maintaining excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
