For example, public accountants often work with multiple clients and focus on auditing, tax preparation, or consulting, which involves frequent collaboration with clients and regulatory bodies. In contrast, management accountants work internally within an organization, frequently partnering with departments like operations and finance to analyze costs, prepare budgets, and support decision-making. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accountant, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of accounting principles, typically backed by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications such as CPA. These capabilities are critical for ensuring accuracy, compliance, and valuable financial insights across various types of accounting roles.

What are the different types of accounting?

There are several main types of accounting, each serving different purposes within organizations. The most common types are financial accounting, which focuses on reporting an organization’s financial performance to external parties; managerial accounting, which helps managers make business decisions through internal reports; and cost accounting, which analyzes the costs of producing goods or services. Other types include tax accounting, which deals with preparing tax returns and ensuring compliance with tax laws, and auditing, which involves examining financial records for accuracy and regulatory compliance. Each type of accounting has its own principles, methods, and professional roles.

Job description

Holman is a family-owned, global automotive services organization anchored by our deeply rooted core values and principles that have enabled us to continue Driving What's Right throughout the last century. Our teams deliver the Holman Experience by treating our customers and each other as we would like to be treated, and creating positive, rewarding relationships all around.

The automotive markets Holman serves include fleet management and leasing; vehicle fabrication and upfitting; component manufacturing and productivity solutions; powertrain distribution and logistics services; commercial and personal insurance and risk management; and retail automotive sales as one of the largest privately owned dealership groups in the United States.

Holman Automotive has an outstanding opportunity for a Dealership Accountant II to join our team in Raleigh/Cary, NC! This newly created role will help expand accounting capacity and strengthen our ability to partner with operations in supporting dealership performance and financial accuracy.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage accounting activity for assigned dealership(s) or business lines, ensuring assigned work is accurate, complete, timely, and properly supported.

  • Perform expanded operational accounting activity, including cash sales review and follow-up, manufacturer incentive posting and reconciliation, and factory invoice review support.

  • Process and coordinate street purchases, auction purchases, wholesale transactions, and related accounting activity.

  • Prepare, maintain, and own assigned schedules and reconciliations, including research and resolution of variances.

  • Complete month-end close tasks for assigned dealership(s), including required reconciliations, entries, and issue escalation.

  • Coordinate with centralized teams where responsibilities are shared and resolve handoff or documentation issues.

  • Train and support Dealership Accountant I team members; serve as first-level escalation for routine or moderately complex transactional questions.

  • Contribute to process improvement, workflow consistency, and improved documentation standards.

  • Independently own assigned accounting processes, schedules, reconciliations, and close activities.

  • Identify, research, and resolve more complex accounting issues with limited supervision.

  • Take ownership of accounting outcomes, reconciliation integrity, and financial statement support within assigned areas.

What are we looking for?

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; equivalent accounting experience may be considered in lieu of formal accounting education beyond this level.

  • Strong working knowledge of accounting principles, general ledger activity, schedules, reconciliations, documentation standards, and variance research.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple activities, meet deadlines, resolve routine-to-moderately complex issues independently, and train or support others.

  • Experienced accountant with approximately 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including ownership of reconciliations, close activities, issue resolution, and mentoring/training of less experienced team members.

  • Experience researching and resolving complex accounting discrepancies.

Compensation: $28 - $35/hour (depending on experience)
