divh2Intake Driver 1st Shift 7:00 am - 3:30 pm/h2pSalary Range $18.00 - $23.00 Hourly/ph3Overview/h3pThe Intake Driver plays a vital role in the Shelter Transport and Response (STAR) program, supporting the City of Chicagos centralized shelter intake and transportation system. This position combines safe client transportation, mobile intake processing, and onsite support functions while stationed at 10 S. Kedzie.
The Intake Driver ensures individuals and families experiencing homelessness are transported safely and with dignity and contributes to safety and operations when not actively in transit./ppIn addition to transport and intake responsibilities, Intake Drivers are responsible for responding to all Senior Well-Being Checks and Crisis Calls routed through Chicagos 311 system. When not in transit, they contribute to maintaining safety and supporting clients at the central intake facility, acting as a key on-site presence during high-volume and crisis events./ppThe ideal candidate is a responsible driver, effective communicator, and a calm presence in both field-based and facility-based settings. This role requires flexibility, attentiveness, and a trauma-informed approach./ph3Key Responsibilities/h3pTransportation and Navigation/pulliOperate agency-assigned vehicles to transport individuals and families experiencing homelessness to designated shelter sites across Chicago./liliUse GPS tools and real-time dispatch communication to navigate efficiently and safely to pick-up and drop-off locations./liliConduct pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles and report maintenance needs./li/ulpClient Engagement Safety/pulliEstablish a respectful, calm, and trauma-informed environment during all interactions./liliSupport client safety, ensure use of seatbelts, maintain vehicle cleanliness, and offer basic supplies (e.g., water, hygiene kits, emergency blankets)./liliReport any concerns about client wellbeing or safety incidents to supervisors and follow critical incident protocols./li/ulpField-Based Shelter Intakes/pulliConduct mobile intakes on-site at hospitals, police stations, or public spaces as assigned./liliCollect necessary client data including demographics, needs, and housing history, using electronic tablets or paper forms./liliVerify eligibility and communicate with dispatch, DFSS, and shelter partners to confirm placements./li/ulpOnsite Intake Support/pulliAssist with intake support at the central intake facility as needed, including helping walk-in clients complete assessments, verifying availability, and preparing for transportation./liliGreet clients and visitors with professionalism and help maintain a calm and respectful environment./liliMonitor behavior in the intake/waiting area and provide support in de-escalating tense or disruptive situations using trauma-informed, nonviolent methods./liliAssist with monitoring environmental safety, support weather-related protocol activation, and notify maintenance or janitorial staff of hazards/liliProvide crowd management and de-escalation support during high-volume shifts./li/ulpDocumentation Reporting/pulliComplete all trip logs, intake records, and system entries (e.g., The Grove, spreadsheets, or agency apps) in real time or by shift end./liliParticipate in debriefs, shift huddles, and ongoing training to improve service delivery./liliMaintain confidentiality and follow all privacy policies, including HIPAA and data-sharing rules./li/ulh3Qualifications/h3pHigh school diploma or GED required./pulliValid Illinois drivers license with clean driving record./lili2+ years of experience in shelter, social services, outreach, transportation, or related roles./liliFamiliarity with GPS, dispatch tools, mobile devices, and cloud-based data entry./liliStrong customer service and crisis de-escalation skills; able to work with vulnerable populations./liliAbility to lift up to 40 lbs, enter/exit vehicles frequently, and drive long distances during shift./liliWillingness to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays as needed./liliSuccessful background check and required health clearances./liliBilingual English/Spanish or other language proficiency a plus./li/ul/div
