What is a developmental psychology research?
A Developmental Psychology Research job involves studying how individuals grow and change throughout their lifespan, focusing on cognitive, emotional, social, and biological development. Researchers design and conduct studies, analyze data, and publish findings to advance understanding in the field. They may work in academic institutions, government agencies, healthcare settings, or private research organizations. Their work helps inform policies, education, and interventions to support healthy development across different life stages.
What are the typical responsibilities of someone working in developmental psychology research?
Professionals in Developmental Psychology Research are typically responsible for designing and conducting studies to understand behavioral and cognitive changes across the lifespan. Day-to-day activities may include developing research proposals, recruiting study participants, collecting and analyzing data, and writing up findings for publication or presentations. Collaboration with faculty, other researchers, and sometimes clinical professionals is common, especially for multi-site or interdisciplinary projects. Many roles also involve mentoring students or junior researchers and contributing to grant writing efforts, offering a dynamic and academically stimulating work environment.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in developmental psychology research?
To thrive in Developmental Psychology Research, you need a deep understanding of psychological theories and research methodologies, typically supported by an advanced degree in psychology or a related field. Experience with statistical analysis software such as SPSS or R, as well as ethical research certifications (like CITI training), is often required. Excellent communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills help you effectively engage with research participants and interdisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for conducting high-quality research, analyzing complex data, and contributing valuable insights to the field.

Job description
The Department of Psychology at Yale University invites applications for an open rank (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) faculty position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027, to be situated within the department's Developmental Psychology area. We are particularly interested in scholars who add breadth to our existing developmental offerings while effectively integrating with our generally cognitive approach. In addition to more traditional developmental foci, we are excited to consider cross-cultural approaches as well as researchers who address fundamental questions about cognition in non-human animals. Priority will be given to outstanding scholars who contribute effectively to both undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring and who are ready to conduct a generative research program.
Qualifications
Eligible applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree at the time of hire.
Application Instructions
Application must be submitted through Interfolio: https://apply.interfolio.com/188997
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and up to three selected publications (published or unpublished). Candidates seeking an appointment with tenure do not need to furnish letters of recommendation. Candidates seeking an appointment without tenure should also arrange to have three (3) letters of recommendation submitted via Interfolio.
Cover letter: The one-page cover letter should include the applicant's name, the title of the position the applicant is submitting materials for, a 3-5 sentence description of the applicant's professional focus, and a brief comment on how the applicant views themselves as adding to the department.
Research statement: The research statement should consist of two parts. One part is the "past research statement" (1000 words max). This should summarize the applicant's main research activities to date. The second part is the "future research statement" (500 words max). This should summarize the applicant's plans for research activities over the next 5 years (i.e., if given a generous startup package what does the applicant envision for their work? What questions does the applicant want to tackle?).
Teaching statement: The teaching statement (1000 words max) should include a summary of the applicant's teaching style inside (formal courses) and outside (mentoring, supervision) of the classroom. The applicant should also mention the types of courses they would be excited to teach.
