What is developmental editing?

A Developmental Editing job involves evaluating the structure, content, and overall coherence of a manuscript to improve its clarity, organization, and impact. Developmental editors work closely with authors to refine story arcs, character development, pacing, and thematic consistency. Unlike copy editors, they focus on big-picture elements rather than grammar or syntax. This process is common in book publishing, particularly for fiction and nonfiction manuscripts. The goal is to help authors strengthen their work before it moves to the next stage of editing and publication.

What are typical challenges faced in developmental editing, and how do editors overcome them?

Developmental Editors often encounter challenges such as helping authors address major structural issues, balancing the author's voice with editorial recommendations, and managing tight deadlines. Overcoming these challenges requires clear and constructive feedback, patience, and strong project management skills to keep revisions on track. Editors also rely on regular communication with authors and other team members to ensure everyone is aligned throughout the editing process. Successfully navigating these challenges leads to a more polished and marketable manuscript while maintaining a positive author-editor relationship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in developmental editing, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developmental Editor, you need advanced skills in manuscript evaluation, story structure, and content organization, usually supported by a background in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editorial software such as Microsoft Word with Track Changes, Adobe Acrobat, and project management tools is important, and professional certifications from organizations like the Editorial Freelancers Association are a plus. Excellent communication, collaboration, and diplomacy are essential soft skills when guiding authors through major revisions. These abilities ensure effective manuscript improvement and foster positive relationships with writers and publishing teams.

Who We Are...
We are CNN. THE WORLD'S MOST ESSENTIAL AND ENGAGING SOURCE OF DIGITAL NEWS. We are in the midst of rapid transformation and need our next generation of innovators, makers, and dreamers who will lead and drive our growth. We aim to make the world a better, more connected place.
Your New Role...
We're seeking Supervising Editor to help shape the storytelling and vision for a forthcoming health & wellness product from CNN. Operating as a player-coach, you will oversee a team of writers and translate high-level editorial strategy directly into service-driven stories across text, audio, video and interactive experiences. You'll be involved in the creative process from pitch to publish, shaping the direction, angle and outcome of every piece. The ideal candidate for this role is a multidisciplinary storyteller who refuses to settle for the familiar and constantly pushes the team to find fresh, innovative angles.
Your Role Accountabilities...
• Balance high-level editing and team management with hands-on writing and content creation when high-priority or complex stories demand it.
• Partner with the Executive Editor, Supervising Producer and Senior Producers to translate high-level editorial strategy into individual story assignments.
• Manage, mentor, and direct a dedicated team of writers, shaping the storytelling, sharpening the angles and providing rigorous, hands-on editing throughout the editorial process.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including editorial, social, audience development and design.
• Ensure all content adheres to CNN's journalistic integrity and reporting guidelines.
Qualifications and Experience...
• 7+ years of editorial experience in digital media, publishing, or a related field.
• Exceptional story judgment and a drive for originality, with a track record of generating fresh, non-derivative angles, and the ability to easily spot and sharpen a weak premise.
• Interest and/or experience in creating practical, highly actionable service journalism.
• Multidisciplinary content experience with an understanding of how to optimize storytelling across a variety of formats, specifically text, audio, video and interactive digital experiences.
• Player-coach mentality with the demonstrated ability to toggle between developmental editing and hands-on writing when necessary.
How We Get Things Done...
This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day. We hope they resonate with you and look forward to discussing them during your interview.
