Job Description

We are currently seeking a qualified Deputy Area Field Engineer to join our Mining team, based out of Leroy SK. The Deputy Area Field Engineer provides technical support to superintendents, directs assigned personnel in meeting cost and time schedules, verifies permanent plant materials, equipment, and workmanship while assuring results meet design requirements. The Deputy Area Field Engineer leads construction engineers in a broad range of construction engineering work usually within a specific engineering discipline for a particular area of the project. They will have the opportunity to work on Hatch and Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan.

After successfully completing the Definition Phase Study for the project, the HBJV is currently carrying out the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published TIC of US $5.3-5.7 Billion this will represent one of the largest projects and private investments in Canada. The HBJV will use a hybrid of best-in-class new developing technologies and systems as well as the proven HBJV suite of tools to execute this exciting project.

* Please note this position is not eligible for a relocation subsidy or living out allowance. This will be a camp position on a 14 day on 7 days off rotation. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the activities of assigned field engineers/specialists and others as assigned.
  • Directs preparation of quantity listings of field purchased material and equipment. Initiates requisitions for field purchases.
  • Ensuring the quality of permanent plant installations is in accordance with appropriate codes and standards.
  • Supervises preparation of field engineering documents. Supervises design of temporary construction facilities and ensures preparation of “as built” drawings.
  • Assists field engineers/specialists, planners and superintendents, in:
    • Interpreting design drawings.
    • Monitoring equipment installation, planning for delivery of permanent plant materials and equipment.
    • Assuring that proper warehousing and storage exists to ensure environmental protection.
  • Reviews specifications, purchase orders, subcontracts, inspection reports, delivery schedules, instruction manuals and technical data to assist and advise on-site.
  • Administers technical service contracts placed by the field handles subcontract changes and interfaces with client personnel.
  • Coordinates with the Project Field Engineering manager on activities affecting the contract administration operation.
  • May represent the company in major contractual discussions and negotiations along with contract administrators.
  • Reviews and/or supervises, as assigned, the preparation of construction quantity estimates and cost engineering studies and assist in reviews of schedules and budgets.
  • Analyzes assigned field engineering activities to determine the scope, time and manpower requirements.
  • Determines that vendors’ bids for material and for equipment are in conformance to specifications and administers field execution of purchase order requirements.
  • Provide technical support for turnover and pre-commissioning activities.
  • Ensures the CDM database gets updated weekly.
  • Verifies installed quantities.
  • Performs personnel evaluation of assigned subordinate personnel.
  • Ensures assigned subordinate personnel receive progressive training for them to assume additional responsibilities.
  • Ensures quality requirements for the area are in compliance with applicable codes, standards and specifications.
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in a specialized engineering discipline, along with knowledge of cost control, scheduling, and/or contract administration within heavy industrial or commercial construction projects.
  • A recognized degree in Engineering or a related scientific discipline, a discipline-specific diploma from an accredited technical college, and/or completion of specialized courses in Construction Management; and/or
  • Relevant field experience as a Field Engineer/Specialist, or Assistant Superintendent, demonstrating a strong understanding of engineering principles, cost control, and scheduling.
