What is data engineering?

A Data Engineering job involves designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure that enables efficient data collection, storage, and processing. Data Engineers develop pipelines to transform raw data into usable formats for analytics and machine learning. They work with databases, big data technologies, and cloud platforms to ensure data is accessible and reliable. Their role is crucial for organizations to make data-driven decisions and optimize business processes.

What does a data engineer do?

Data Engineers regularly design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines to support analytics and business intelligence teams. Their daily tasks often involve working with large datasets, optimizing data storage, ensuring data integrity, and troubleshooting data-related issues. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers is common to align on data requirements and improve workflows. You may also participate in regular code reviews and contribute to the ongoing improvement of data infrastructure. This role is ideal for problem-solvers who enjoy working with both code and complex systems in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a data engineer?

To thrive in Data Engineering, you need a solid background in programming (such as Python, Java, or Scala), data modeling, and database management, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ETL tools, cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, big data frameworks (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), and relevant certifications is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively across teams are key soft skills for this role. These attributes are crucial for designing robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and enabling organizations to make data-driven decisions efficiently.

Are data engineers still in demand?

Data engineers are currently in high demand due to the increasing reliance on data-driven decision making and the growth of big data technologies. They typically need skills in SQL, cloud platforms, and tools like Apache Spark or Hadoop, and job opportunities are expected to remain strong as organizations continue to prioritize data infrastructure.

-How you'll make an impact

As a Senior Developer (Data Engineering), you'll play a key role in shaping the future of FCC's modern data platform. Acting as a bridge between development and architecture, you'll provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on in the design, development and implementation of complex data solutions. This role combines deep expertise in data engineering, solution architecture, mentoring and platform adoption. It is intended for a senior technical professional who can help guide architectural decisions while remaining actively involved in delivery.

Working closely with architects, data consumers, developers, and data producers, you will lead the development and execution of effective skills development programs while providing guidance on overall a la carte training offerings that align with architecturally approved patterns and standards. In this role, you will drive the continuous improvement of training programs by gathering stakeholder feedback, collaborating with product architects on key decisions, and leading the adoption team through implementation activities.

As many data consumers require architectural guidance as part of their data modernization journey, this role will be instrumental in addressing that need. You will work in partnership with adoption team architects to understand strategic direction and provide effective architectural support to stakeholders. Acting as a key liaison between product architects and delivery teams, you will ensure that architectural standards, best practices, and strategic objectives are consistently communicated, understood, and applied across initiatives.

This is an opportunity to influence how FCC designs, builds and delivers data solutions while helping grow technical capabilities across the organization. If you're passionate about architecture, cloud technologies, complex problem-solving and developing others, you'll thrive in this role.

What you'll do
  • Managing and contributing to technical documentation

  • Designing and creating learning modules to enable adoption of new data technology and platform

  • Lead and deliver learning sessions to the data community with new skills, tools, technologies and frameworks

  • Working with architects to improve the learning modules and delivery methods

  • Build post-training partnerships with new consumer groups to ensure they are supported

  • Participate in and lead architecture, design and technical review sessions

  • Contribute to the architectural direction of FCC's modern data platform

  • Collaborate with architects and technical teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions

  • Design and develop complex data pipelines, integrations and reusable platform components

  • Support the modernization of legacy tools and technologies to AWS-based solutions

  • Participate in design sessions and solution implementation

  • Analyze and develop new code, including automation, integration and unit tests

  • Implement code fixes and support user testing

  • Actively contribute to code reviews, providing constructive feedback to team members

  • Mentor developers and data practitioners on data engineering, solution design and cloud technologies

  • Ensure technical solutions and system integrations are developed and maintained in the most efficient and effective manner

What you'll bring to the team

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering

  • Eight to 10 years of related experience in software development, data engineering, solution design or technical leadership (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Experience designing and implementing complex enterprise-scale technology solutions

  • Experience contributing to solution architecture and technical design decisions

  • Experience with designing and conducting training sessions for audiences with varying levels of expertise

  • Experience with data engineering tools, platforms and approaches

  • Experience building infrastructure as code (AWS CloudFormation)

  • Experience mentoring, coaching and providing technical leadership to development teams

Preferred Qualifications
  • Functional programming experience

  • Experience with data modelling, data warehouse building and creating data access layers

  • Experience working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies and concepts: Data Pipelines, Spark, Glue, RedShift, SageMaker, QuickSight, DMS, IAM and able to provide guidance to new adopters to use them

  • Ability to map legacy tools and technologies to modern AWS solutions

  • Experience with Informatica or any ETL tool

  • Experience with data observability and tools like DataHub

  • Experience with Data Vault 2.0

  • Experience designing modern cloud-based data architectures and enterprise data platforms

  • Experience leading technical design discussions, architecture reviews and solution planning activities
