What Does a Designer Do?

A designer uses creative skills to organize ideas and information into a visual layout to help companies define products and services. As a designer, you can find jobs in many industries, including fashion merchandising, advertising and marketing, computer programming and software development, and manufacturing. Specific job duties vary, depending on the type of industry you are in and the project you are assigned. But for most designers, your responsibilities include working with a team to bring ideas to fruition, such as new product designs or how best to present a new service. You must also ensure that your end result meets your client's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Designer, you need a strong grasp of visual design principles, proficiency in layout and typography, and often a relevant degree or certification in design. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or Sketch is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help designers collaborate and translate ideas into compelling visuals. These competencies ensure high-quality, impactful designs that meet client goals and user needs.

How do designers typically collaborate with other departments in a company?

Designers often work closely with teams like marketing, product management, and engineering to ensure that visual concepts align with business objectives and technical requirements. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings, feedback sessions, and the use of shared project management tools. Designers may also participate in brainstorming sessions and design reviews to incorporate diverse perspectives and quickly iterate on ideas. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for delivering cohesive, user-centered solutions.

What are designers and what do they do?

Designers are creative professionals who develop visual concepts and solutions to communicate ideas, solve problems, or enhance aesthetics across various fields such as graphic design, interior design, fashion, and product design. Their work involves understanding client needs, researching trends, and using tools or software to create appealing and functional designs. Designers often collaborate with clients, engineers, or other creatives to bring concepts to life from initial sketches to final products. The specific tasks and skills required can vary depending on the design discipline and industry.

  • Develop design narratives, spatial strategies, and presentation materials with increasing independence.
  • Coordinate design tasks with consultants and internal teams.

  • Balance creativity with functional, technical, and regulatory considerations.

Senior Designer

  • Establish design intent, criteria, and design narratives aligned with client goals.
  • Present design concepts with clarity and confidence to clients and stakeholders.
  • Mentor and guide Designers and Project Designers to ensure high-quality, cohesive design outcomes.
  • Collaborate with firm leadership to align design excellence with project delivery, schedules, and budgets.
