What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, you need expertise in UI/UX principles, front-end development, and a strong understanding of design patterns, usually supported by a background in design or computer science. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Storybook, and version control systems is essential to build and maintain scalable design systems. Strong communication, collaboration, and attention to detail set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure cohesive user experiences, efficient workflows, and consistent brand implementation across digital products.

What is the difference between Design Systems vs UX Designer?

AspectDesign SystemsUX Designer

Industry UsageCommon in organizations with large product ecosystems and multiple teamsFound across tech, e-commerce, and service industries focusing on user experience

While Design Systems focus on establishing consistent design standards and reusable components, UX Designers concentrate on understanding user needs and crafting intuitive experiences. Both roles collaborate closely to ensure products are visually cohesive and user-friendly, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

How does a Design Systems role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams, and what challenges might arise?

Professionals working in Design Systems frequently collaborate with product managers, engineers, and UX/UI designers to ensure consistency and efficiency across digital products. A key challenge is balancing the need for standardization with the creative needs of individual teams, which often requires strong communication and negotiation skills. Regular meetings, documentation, and design reviews are common practices to foster alignment and address feedback. Navigating differing priorities and integrating updates into an established system are also typical hurdles, making adaptability and problem-solving essential in this role.

What are design systems?

Design systems are comprehensive collections of guidelines, reusable components, and standards that help teams create consistent, cohesive, and efficient user interfaces across products. They typically include visual style guides, UI components, usage documentation, and coding resources to streamline design and development processes. By using a design system, organizations can ensure brand consistency, improve collaboration between designers and developers, and accelerate product development.

Job description

The Roleย

We're looking for a highly experienced Senior Product Designer to build Farther's design system from the ground up and own it long-term. This foundational role will define how our entire product organization works-creating the infrastructure that enables consistent, high-quality experiences at speed.

You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of the design system: auditing assets, creating a scalable component library, defining patterns, and layouts, documenting usage, and driving adoption across design and engineering. This is deep, hands-on, expert-level work that requires strategic thinking, systems-level vision, and the ability to execute down to the smallest detail.

Your Impactย

Design Systems Ownership

  • Audit existing design assets and build a scalable, accessible component library in Figma
  • Create reusable components, design tokens, and detailed usage documentation
  • Own prioritization, roadmapping, and stakeholder communication for the design system
  • Define governance processes for adoption, enhancements, and deprecations
  • Collaborate closely with engineering to ensure design-to-code fidelity and proper implementation
  • Establish education and onboarding processes that drive real adoption across the team

Supporting Design Team Work

  • Provide guidance and support to designers across advisor tools, client platforms, and mobile, ensuring design system principles are applied consistently
  • Partner with PMs and engineering teams as needed to clarify component usage, patterns, and best practices during feature implementation
  • Apply systems thinking to help maintain consistency, accessibility, and quality across all product experiences
  • Collaborate with other designers to support seamless cross-platform experiences, leveraging the design system as the single source of truth
The Ideal Matchย
  • 5+ years of product design experience, including 3+ years leading design systems
  • Expert in Figma, capable of building scalable component architecturesย
  • Deep understanding of design-to-code implementation and cross-platform consistency
  • Both strategic and executional-able to set vision, define governance, and execute detailed components
  • Self-directed, highly organized, and skilled at prioritization and stakeholder management
  • Excited by the challenge of building and maintaining a permanent, enterprise-grade design system
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and collaboration skills
Bonus Pointsย
  • Experience in fintech or regulated industries
  • Familiarity with Storybook or similar tools
  • Background in mobile design systems (iOS/Android)
  • Interest in AI tools and design automation
  • Experience mentoring designers or leading adoption initiatives
