Design Systems information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, you need expertise in UI/UX principles, front-end development, and a strong understanding of design patterns, usually supported by a background in design or computer science. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Storybook, and version control systems is essential to build and maintain scalable design systems. Strong communication, collaboration, and attention to detail set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure cohesive user experiences, efficient workflows, and consistent brand implementation across digital products.

What is the difference between Design Systems vs UX Designer?

While Design Systems focus on establishing consistent design standards and reusable components, UX Designers concentrate on understanding user needs and crafting intuitive experiences. Both roles collaborate closely to ensure products are visually cohesive and user-friendly, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

How does a Design Systems role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams, and what challenges might arise?

Professionals working in Design Systems frequently collaborate with product managers, engineers, and UX/UI designers to ensure consistency and efficiency across digital products. A key challenge is balancing the need for standardization with the creative needs of individual teams, which often requires strong communication and negotiation skills. Regular meetings, documentation, and design reviews are common practices to foster alignment and address feedback. Navigating differing priorities and integrating updates into an established system are also typical hurdles, making adaptability and problem-solving essential in this role.

What are design systems?

Design systems are comprehensive collections of guidelines, reusable components, and standards that help teams create consistent, cohesive, and efficient user interfaces across products. They typically include visual style guides, UI components, usage documentation, and coding resources to streamline design and development processes. By using a design system, organizations can ensure brand consistency, improve collaboration between designers and developers, and accelerate product development.

Job description

Haus is seeking an experienced Creative Director with specialized experience in design systems to join our Los Angeles team. In this role, you will act as the senior creative and operational lead for a dedicated production support team, setting the standard for how design system components are built, documented, and governed across a mature, deeply integrated design system. You will oversee a multidisciplinary team spanning UX, UI, and documentation, while serving as the primary point of contact for the client's internal design system leadership.

Requirements

What you'll do:

  • Own the quality, consistency, and craft of the design system across Figma design files and their code-adjacent counterparts.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of UX and UI Designers, providing creative direction, feedback, and professional development
  • Serve as the primary client-facing creative voice and represent the team in design reviews and client meetings
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the client's existing design system architecture
  • Establish documentation standards and QC practices across the team
  • Balance big-picture design system strategy with hands-on review of components, tokens, and accessibility standards

What you'll bring:

  • 5+ years of design experience, with at least 3 years in a creative leadership role
  • Experience building, scaling, or documenting an enterprise-level design system
  • Expert-level Figma experience, including auto layout, variants, component properties, and token architecture
  • Strong working knowledge of design token systems (color, typography, spacing, elevation) and how they map to code
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and how they apply to component design
  • Experience with design system documentation platforms
  • Excellent client-facing communication skills
  • Proven ability to lead and help develop creative and UX/UI talent

Benefits

We're a digital design studio in Los Angeles built on the belief that creativity and technology are better together. Our team is diverse, multidisciplinary, and deeply invested in the craft. We work with brands across industries, from emerging startups to household names, on projects that push what digital can do.

If you're looking for a place where your ideas are heard, your growth is supported, and the work actually matters-we'd love to meet you.

The estimated compensation for this position is $180K-$225K per year, depending on experience, plus a 401k, medical, dental, vision, life and optional benefits, paid time off, fun events and more.
