What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, you need expertise in UI/UX principles, front-end development, and a strong understanding of design patterns, usually supported by a background in design or computer science. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Storybook, and version control systems is essential to build and maintain scalable design systems. Strong communication, collaboration, and attention to detail set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure cohesive user experiences, efficient workflows, and consistent brand implementation across digital products.

What is the difference between Design Systems vs UX Designer?

AspectDesign SystemsUX Designer
Primary FocusCreating and maintaining a cohesive set of design standards, components, and guidelines for productsResearching, designing, and improving user experiences through wireframes, prototypes, and user testing
Skills & CredentialsDesign principles, UI components, branding, collaboration skillsUser research, interaction design, visual design, usability testing

Industry UsageCommon in organizations with large product ecosystems and multiple teamsFound across tech, e-commerce, and service industries focusing on user experience

While Design Systems focus on establishing consistent design standards and reusable components, UX Designers concentrate on understanding user needs and crafting intuitive experiences. Both roles collaborate closely to ensure products are visually cohesive and user-friendly, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

How does a Design Systems role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams, and what challenges might arise?

Professionals working in Design Systems frequently collaborate with product managers, engineers, and UX/UI designers to ensure consistency and efficiency across digital products. A key challenge is balancing the need for standardization with the creative needs of individual teams, which often requires strong communication and negotiation skills. Regular meetings, documentation, and design reviews are common practices to foster alignment and address feedback. Navigating differing priorities and integrating updates into an established system are also typical hurdles, making adaptability and problem-solving essential in this role.

What are design systems?

Design systems are comprehensive collections of guidelines, reusable components, and standards that help teams create consistent, cohesive, and efficient user interfaces across products. They typically include visual style guides, UI components, usage documentation, and coding resources to streamline design and development processes. By using a design system, organizations can ensure brand consistency, improve collaboration between designers and developers, and accelerate product development.

Job description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Design Systems Engineer in Greenwood Village, CO.
Summary:
We are looking for a Design Systems Engineer to help build and evolve a shared component library that enables teams to deliver high-quality digital experiences faster. This role combines hands-on engineering, architecture, and collaboration across product, design, and development teams. You will own key areas of the React component library, help shape reusable patterns, and create solutions that make other engineers and designers more successful. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, building tools that others rely on, and balancing technical excellence with creativity.
What You'll Do:
* The Design Systems Engineer will own and evolve the React component library, including architecture, implementation, and ongoing improvements
* Build production-quality React and TypeScript components used by digital product teams
* Partner with product, design, and engineering teams to deliver scalable solutions
* Work directly with teams consuming the design system to understand their needs, identify opportunities, and improve developer experience
* Influence component APIs, patterns, documentation, and implementation standards
* Translate design concepts into flexible, reusable engineering solutions
* Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance while remaining hands-on in development
* As a Design Systems Engineer, you will identify opportunities to simplify development processes and create tools, patterns, and systems that benefit other teams
* Collaborate with other technical experts to ensure consistency, accessibility, and scalability across the design system
REQUIREMENTS:
* 6+ years of hands-on software development experience
* Strong React and TypeScript expertise with experience building reusable components, libraries, or developer tools
* Experience delivering digital products and working with design systems or component libraries
* Strong front-end architecture skills and ability to write clean, maintainable, well-tested code
* Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions and influence outcomes
* Creative problem solver who simplifies complex challenges and balances flexibility with consistency
* Technologies: React, TypeScript, component libraries, automated testing, and developer tooling
* Ability to collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to translate needs into scalable solutions
* You understand that a component library is more than UI elements-it is a platform that helps teams build faster and more consistently; You care about usability, accessibility, documentation, and creating solutions that improve the developer experience
* You are a hands-on engineer who enjoys building systems that help others succeed; You bring strong React expertise, technical depth, creativity, and a passion for turning complex problems into simple, scalable solutions
Why This Role Matters:
You will be a technical owner and key contributor for a React component library used by product teams across the organization. You will help shape engineering standards, create reusable solutions, and build tools that enable other developers to be successful.
