What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, you need expertise in UI/UX principles, front-end development, and a strong understanding of design patterns, usually supported by a background in design or computer science. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Storybook, and version control systems is essential to build and maintain scalable design systems. Strong communication, collaboration, and attention to detail set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure cohesive user experiences, efficient workflows, and consistent brand implementation across digital products.

How does a Design Systems role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams, and what challenges might arise?

Professionals working in Design Systems frequently collaborate with product managers, engineers, and UX/UI designers to ensure consistency and efficiency across digital products. A key challenge is balancing the need for standardization with the creative needs of individual teams, which often requires strong communication and negotiation skills. Regular meetings, documentation, and design reviews are common practices to foster alignment and address feedback. Navigating differing priorities and integrating updates into an established system are also typical hurdles, making adaptability and problem-solving essential in this role.

What are design systems?

Design systems are comprehensive collections of guidelines, reusable components, and standards that help teams create consistent, cohesive, and efficient user interfaces across products. They typically include visual style guides, UI components, usage documentation, and coding resources to streamline design and development processes. By using a design system, organizations can ensure brand consistency, improve collaboration between designers and developers, and accelerate product development.

Job description

Weโ€™re looking for a Design Systems Program Manager to join Procoreโ€™s Design Systems / Core UX team. In this role, youโ€™ll lead the operational strategy for our central design foundations. The primary goal of this role is to streamline the development and evolution of the design system to ensure it is closely aligned with the design organization's strategic goals.
ย

As a Design Systems Program Manager, youโ€™ll partner with Product Design Leads, Engineering, and Product Managers to build systems and workflows that help teams work efficiently and deliver high-quality design. Use your strategic foresight, systems thinking, and project management skills to scale design excellence and reduce coordination tax across the enterprise.
ย

This position reports to the Head of Design Systems and will be based in Austin, TX. Weโ€™re looking for someone to join us immediately.
ย

What youโ€™ll do:

  • Manage the end-to-end design lifecycle for Design System and Core UXย  initiatives and roadmaps, partnering cross-functionally to ensure alignment with product and organization goals, from initial requirements to rollout.

  • Define and implement a realistic program plan for Design System and Core UX releases, establishing clear milestones, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure operational efficiency, and ensuring integration with product team schedules and expectations.

  • Establish scalable creative workflows and documentation that improve visibility and feedback cycles across product lines.

  • Build and foster strong relationships with stakeholders to help establish ways of improving the health and trust in our system.

  • Coordinate design team rituals, including critiques and weekly updates, to foster a high-performance culture.

  • Identify and mitigate project blockers by developing clear communication plans for diverse stakeholder groups.

  • Lead prioritization and trade-off discussions between technical debt and new business initiatives to meet schedule objectives.

  • Advocate for new productivity tools and best practices to enhance the overall creativity and productivity of the design team.

  • At Procore, AI isnโ€™t a specialized tool, it's a core competency. We expect every team member to be AI-literate, leveraging generative tools and agentic workflows to move faster and work smarter. You wonโ€™t just use AI; youโ€™ll be building the agentic future of construction.

What weโ€™re looking for:

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Design Program Manager, Design Operations Manager, or UX Program Manager within an in-house design organization.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in design and program management tools such as Figma, Jira, and Miro.

  • Systems Thinking: Demonstrated experience building standards, frameworks, or libraries that improved the output of a large product organization.

  • Communication: Exceptional ability to distill complex technical information for senior leadership and non-technical audiences.

  • Core UX Knowledge: A deep understanding of the software product development lifecycle and user-centered design principles.

  • Adaptability and action-oriented: Comfort with navigating through ambiguity and managing multiple interdependent projects with unique resource constraints.

  • Certifications: PMP or similar project management certification is a plus.

Base Pay Range:

90,400.00 - 124,300.00 USD Annual

This role may also be eligible for Equity Compensation and/or Bonus Incentive Compensation. Procore is committed to offering competitive, fair, and commensurate compensation. Actual compensation will be based on a candidateโ€™s job-related skills, experience, education or training, and location.
