What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, you need expertise in UI/UX principles, front-end development, and a strong understanding of design patterns, usually supported by a background in design or computer science. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Storybook, and version control systems is essential to build and maintain scalable design systems. Strong communication, collaboration, and attention to detail set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure cohesive user experiences, efficient workflows, and consistent brand implementation across digital products.

How does a Design Systems role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams, and what challenges might arise?

Professionals working in Design Systems frequently collaborate with product managers, engineers, and UX/UI designers to ensure consistency and efficiency across digital products. A key challenge is balancing the need for standardization with the creative needs of individual teams, which often requires strong communication and negotiation skills. Regular meetings, documentation, and design reviews are common practices to foster alignment and address feedback. Navigating differing priorities and integrating updates into an established system are also typical hurdles, making adaptability and problem-solving essential in this role.

What are design systems?

Design systems are comprehensive collections of guidelines, reusable components, and standards that help teams create consistent, cohesive, and efficient user interfaces across products. They typically include visual style guides, UI components, usage documentation, and coding resources to streamline design and development processes. By using a design system, organizations can ensure brand consistency, improve collaboration between designers and developers, and accelerate product development.

What is the difference between Design Systems vs UX Designer?

AspectDesign SystemsUX Designer
Primary FocusCreating and maintaining a cohesive set of design standards, components, and guidelines for productsResearching, designing, and improving user experiences through wireframes, prototypes, and user testing
Skills & CredentialsDesign principles, UI components, branding, collaboration skillsUser research, interaction design, visual design, usability testing
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with product teams, developers, and UI designersWorks closely with users, product managers, and developers
Industry UsageCommon in organizations with large product ecosystems and multiple teamsFound across tech, e-commerce, and service industries focusing on user experience

While Design Systems focus on establishing consistent design standards and reusable components, UX Designers concentrate on understanding user needs and crafting intuitive experiences. Both roles collaborate closely to ensure products are visually cohesive and user-friendly, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Location: This role can be done remotely

KORE1, a nationwide provider of staffing and recruiting solutions, has an immediate opening for a Full-Stack Product Engineer ? React, Next.js, TypeScript, UI/UX & Design Systems with the option to be fully remote.

This role is centered on product-driven full-stack development with a strong emphasis on frontend craft, design systems, and user experience. You'll work across a broad product surface, including creator tools, public profiles, community features, and internal systems-owning features end-to-end while shaping how the product looks, feels, and represents the brand.

This is a true full-stack role with equal ownership across frontend, backend, and product experience. You will be expected to move fluidly across the stack-designing data models, building APIs, and delivering polished UI-while contributing to a cohesive, high-quality product experience.

We're looking for someone who doesn't just build functionality, but obsesses over product quality-balancing technical execution with strong design and UX instincts.

What You'll Do
  • Build and ship end-to-end product features, from database schema through to polished, production-ready UI
  • Lead the evolution of a large-scale design system (500+ components), ensuring consistency, scalability, and strong visual identity
  • Drive the overall look and feel of the product, including typography, color systems, spacing, animations, and micro-interactions
  • Develop full-stack experiences across the product lifecycle, including onboarding flows, media management, user profiles, and subscription/billing interfaces
  • Contribute to and support shared systems across the platform, including occasional overlap with payment-related UI (checkout, subscriptions, billing flows) and light backend debugging where needed
  • Contribute to product direction by identifying opportunities to improve user experience, engagement, and conversion
  • Develop and maintain backend functionality, including API endpoints, database queries, and real-time features
  • Support quality and reliability through testing and documentation, including visual regression testing, end-to-end testing, and component documentation
  • Leverage AI tools where appropriate to accelerate development, prototyping, testing, and overall product iteration

Work style:
  • Small, high-ownership team - you'll own entire systems, not just tickets
  • Pre-commit validation runs 19,600+ tests on every commit
  • Self-hosted infrastructure (DigitalOcean), not serverless
  • Staging -> production deployment flow with manual production gate

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree from a competitive university OR a proven track record of delivering high-impact, real-world products at meaningful scale
  • Hands-on product development experience building B2B or B2C SaaS products with defined licensing and/or subscription models; experience limited to internal or purely cloud-hosted applications will not be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience building production web applications, including hands-on backend/API development
  • Strong expertise in React and modern CSS frameworks (e.g., Tailwind), with the ability to build complex, responsive interfaces from scratch
  • Experience working with design systems or component libraries at scale
  • Solid backend fundamentals, including REST API design, relational databases, authentication, and asynchronous processing
  • Familiarity with modern frameworks and tools such as Next.js and Node.js-based backends
  • Experience with testing and documentation tools such as Storybook, Playwright, or similar
  • Strong product mindset with attention to detail in UX, visual hierarchy, and brand consistency
  • Ability to make design decisions independently for smaller features, while collaborating and incorporating feedback on larger feature sets
  • Comfort operating across the full stack, with the ability to contribute to adjacent systems (e.g., payment UI flows, shared platform components)
  • Ability to balance speed, quality, and ownership across multiple competing priorities
  • Experience leveraging AI tools in your workflow (e.g., development, testing, system design, debugging, or documentation), including clear examples of tools used, in which roles/companies, and for what functions
  • If applicable, ability to articulate the extent to which AI-assisted coding has been utilized (e.g., percentage of code or workflow supported by AI tools)

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Radix UI, CVA, Zustand, React Query, Prisma, or Temporal
  • Background in building or scaling design systems
  • Experience contributing to or influencing product and brand direction
  • Experience working with subscription or billing-related UI flows

What we value:
  • Ship working software over perfect architecture
  • Own your domain end-to-end (design -> implement -> deploy -> monitor)
  • Write tests that catch real bugs, not tests for coverage numbers
  • Communicate clearly when things break - incidents happen, silence is the problem

Technology Stack
  • React 18, Next.js 14, TypeScript monorepo
  • Tailwind CSS, Radix UI, Storybook
  • NestJS, Prisma, PostgreSQL, Redis
  • Temporal, Playwright, Chromatic
  • Self-hosted infrastructure (DigitalOcean), not serverless
  • Cloudflare R2

With all applications, please provide the following:
  • Details on any AI tools/platforms you have used in your work, including which companies/roles you used them in and for what functions (e.g., development, testing, system design, debugging, documentation)
  • Proof of work: Please share a couple of example links to your work (live websites or systems in production) that you can confidently say you owned end-to-end.
  • Scale: For the examples above, provide a rough metric of how much traffic, users, or usage they experienced (e.g., number of users or system volume).
  • AI/LLM usage: Provide a rough estimate of what percentage of the work on those examples was done with the help of LLMs or coding agents.

Compensation depends on experience but is typically $120-150K

Note: This engagement does not include a benefits package.
