As a Design Summer intern, you can expect to engage in a variety of projects ranging from assisting with client presentations and brainstorming sessions to contributing to the development of visual assets, prototypes, and user interface designs. Assignments are often structured to provide exposure to different stages of the design process and may involve close collaboration with senior designers, product managers, and engineers. To thrive as a Design Intern in a summer program, you typically need foundational design skills, familiarity with design principles, and a portfolio demonstrating creative work, often supported by coursework in graphic or product design. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite or Figma, and sometimes basic knowledge of prototyping tools, is often required. Strong communication, openness to feedback, and collaboration skills make a candidate stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure you can contribute effectively to projects, learn quickly, and add value to creative teams in a short timeframe.

What is a Design Summer internship?

A Design Summer internship is a temporary position, usually lasting several weeks during the summer, where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience working in a design-related field. Interns typically assist with projects in areas such as graphic design, product design, UX/UI, or interior design, depending on the organization. These internships provide valuable exposure to real-world design processes, collaboration with professionals, and opportunities to build a portfolio. They are often a stepping stone to full-time careers in design.
