Manager, Design Operations
As a Design Operations Manager, you will play a central role in enabling our design, product, and operations teams to move faster. You will think strategically about how teams work together and design systems and structures to help scale. You have a deep understanding of best practices in program management and have successfully led cross-functional stakeholder groups to deliver quality products and experiences. In this role you will rely on your ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders, create clarity through excellent communication, and solve complex and ambiguous problems.
The Design Operations Manager will support the day-to-day operations, strategic planning, portfolio execution, and program management of key, high-level projects. While this role is an individual contributor, success relies heavily on building authentic relationships with peers, partners and leaders.

What You'll Do:
You'll be asked to handle a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Business & People Operations:
    • In close collaboration with design leadership manage the design team's people operations and business operations. Activities in this space may range from KPI/OKR management, headcount, and partner management to developing team rituals, culture, and fostering overall positive team health
    • Mentor and share design operations expertise with team members
    • Support the hiring and onboarding of employees, manage contractors and vendors, strategically balance attrition.
  • Design Standards & Practice Management:
    • Enable high quality design outcomes by maintaining design standards and practices across teams including identifying any bottlenecks in the workflow or opportunities to improve the design process and outcomes for teams
    • Collaborate with peers across the broader Design organization on priority initiatives, scaling best practices, and building new processes to ensure the organization is well managed
    • Shape agendas, facilitate collaboration sessions, and build frameworks to drive teams towards outcomes
    • Identify team and project needs with regards to design process, tools, documentation, asset management. Take steps to implement necessary changes to make sure design teams are operating at optimum efficiency
  • Design Portfolio & Program Management:
    • Develop resourcing, capacity planning, and program management routines to ensure teams are delivering against established goals and objectives
    • Using industry best practices drive delivery, collaboration, and risk mediation across cross-functional teams, including product and tech partners.
    • Provide clear communication to cross-functional leadership on status, resources, issues, and priorities.

Basic Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of experience in design management, project or program management of design deliverables, and operations management including experience working directly with experience designers, researchers, and strategists
  • At least 5 years of experience leading project delivery for cross functional projects

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of design tool use and tool management experience
  • Experience with design systems
  • Experience working with corporate design teams
  • Understanding of design quality and product strategy

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $164,800 - $188,100 for Manager, Design
New York, NY: $179,700 - $205,100 for Manager, Design
Richmond, VA: $149,800 - $171,000 for Manager, Design
San Francisco, CA: $179,700 - $205,100 for Manager, Design
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
