Design Engineer (Electrical Focus)

Location: Sherwood Park, AB (with travel to project sites as required)

MSCP Heat Management Solutions is a rapidly evolving organization built as a system of interdependent processes and not as a traditional hierarchy. Estimating, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and field execution operate as connected entity, each contributing to the overall flow of work.

Our focus is not on maximizing efficiency, we focus on managing our chosen constraints and improving total system throughput. This requires a shared conceptual foundation grounded in systems thinking, Theory of Constraints, and practical application in industrial environments.

Engineering at MSCP does not exist as a standalone function. It exists to enable flowโ€”to ensure that what is designed can be estimated, built, installed, and maintained without friction.

Our work spans different industrial sectors, including oil & gas, where electrical reliability, constructability, and repeatability are critical. Strong theoretical understanding is valued as it leads to clear, executable, and scalable solutions.

Role Overview

The Design/Structural Engineer is a new position that plays a central role in strengthening MSCPโ€™s electrical design capability as we expand into more complex product and system offerings that require standardization and a high level of repeatability.

This role is responsible for developing engineered solutions related to structural/electrical assemblies, heat management systems, insulation systems, and supporting infrastructure, while ensuring alignment with electrical heat trace (EHT) and control systems, where required.

The Design Engineer is expected to operate across the system, bridging engineering, manufacturing, and field execution, ensuring that designs are not only technically sound, but flow efficiently from concept to installation.

Success in this role is measured by:

  • Reduction in rework and design-related delays

  • Increased repeatability and standardization

  • Improved integration between mechanical, electrical, and field execution

  • Contribution to the development of scalable electrical capabilities within MSCP

Key Responsibilities

Electrical & Automation Design and Engineering

  • Develop detailed electrical designs, assemblies, and engineered solutions for heat management and insulation systems

  • Design of complex electrical structures and supports that are robust, installable, and suited to industrial environments

  • Produce fabrication-ready drawings, models, and specifications with a focus on clarity and usability

  • Ensure all designs are grounded in real-world constructability, access, and installation constraints

  • Drive standardization of electrical components and assemblies to support repeatable execution

  • Ensure electrical designs integrate effectively with electrical heat trace (EHT), controls, and automation systems

  • Work with internal teams and vendors to align on power, control, and instrumentation requirements

  • Maintain alignment between electrical design intent and system-level functionality

System-Centered Engineering

  • Design with full awareness of downstream impacts across estimating, procurement, manufacturing, and field execution

  • Identify and address constraints in design that may limit flow, constructability, or scalability

  • Collaborate company wide to ensure designs contribute to overall system performance rather than local optimization

  • Translate field and manufacturing feedback into improved design approaches

Manufacturing & Product Development

  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) with a focus on electrical components and assemblies

  • Support the transition from custom design work to repeatable, production-ready solutions

  • Contribute to manufacturing setup, including tooling considerations and production flow

  • Assist in building MSCPโ€™s internal capability to produce standardized electrical systems

Field Integration & Support

  • Engage with field teams to validate designs and ensure alignment with installation realities

  • Participate in site visits to observe system performance and gather feedback

  • Troubleshoot electrical and system-level issues and adjust designs accordingly

  • Ensure designs reduce ambiguity and enable efficient field execution

Continuous Improvement & Capability Building

  • Contribute to the development of engineering standards, templates, and best practices

  • Identify opportunities to simplify designs and reduce unnecessary complexity

  • Support the ongoing evolution of MSCPโ€™s engineering function within our chosen system management approach (Deming and Theory of Constraints)

  • Play a role in building long-term electrical design capability within the organization

Qualifications & Experience
  • Advanced Engineering degree in Electrical

  • 5+ years of experience in electrical design within industrial, construction, or manufacturing environments

  • Demonstrated experience designing electrical systems, structures, or assemblies in real-world applications

  • Exposure to electrical systems such as heat trace (EHT), controls, or automation is considered an asset

  • Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)

  • Experience developing fabrication drawings, electrical assemblies, and Bills of Materials

  • Strong understanding of materials, thermal systems, insulation systems, or industrial environments
