Job description

Matrix designs, manufactures, and sells innovative technological products that help keep people safe. Originally focused on the underground coal mining industry, Matrix has expanded into new industrial markets in the United States and globally.
We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer who will participate in all product stages from research and development to design and manufacturing, through installation and final commissioning. Your duties will include designing, developing, prototyping, and testing mechanical components of products and systems. You should be well-versed in complex mechanical or electronic systems and possess excellent problem-solving abilities as well as a creative approach to your tasks. This position works in a team environment at our home office in Newburgh, IN. This is not a remote position.
This position reports to the Director of Engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Organize a full lifecycle product development, including design, development, test prototypes, manufacturing, and implementation
  • Develop systems and components that meet customer needs and regulatory requirements. Prepare outline designs.
  • Organize experiments methodically, analyze data and interpret results
  • Conduct tests and evaluate theoretical designs
  • Research and produce effective solutions to emerging problems
  • Review of the final product's overall performance, reliability, and safety
  • Improve design to meet requirements and eliminate malfunctions
  • Help create product reports, product, documentation, end-user documentation, and sales literature
  • Stay informed about new theories or methods

Qualifications & Competencies
  • BS Mechanical Engineering
  • 7+ years' experience working as a Mechanical Engineer or in other relevant position
  • Experience in solid modeling, preferably SolidWorks
  • Experience in ANSI Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) preferred.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM), preferably Arena
  • Working knowledge of DFSS, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Design of Experiments (DOE) preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of core concepts and principles of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, etc.
  • Strong creativity and analytical skills
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills

Working Conditions
  • Daily Job duties will consist of office, lab, and desk work with occasional field testing required.
  • Candidates may be required to work underground, but on an infrequent basis.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to work near large moving machinery, but on an infrequent basis.
  • Customer operations may contain airborne particles and allergens.
  • Matrix employees may be furnished and required to wear safety gear such as hard hats, steel toe shoes, reflective clothing, earplugs, and safety glasses as needed.
  • Occasional travel and ability to work various shifts as required by customer.
