Job description

VIAS is a trusted engineering design firm committed to delivering high-quality transportation solutions across the Carolinas and beyond. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a skilled Roadway Design Engineer to join our team.
The Roadway Design Engineer will be responsible for leading and supporting the design of roadway improvement projects from concept through construction documents. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation in highway design, hands-on experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD), and a working knowledge of North Carolina standards and processes.
Responsibilities include:
• Develop roadway design plans, profiles, cross-sections, and construction documents for transportation and multi-modal projects
• Perform horizontal and vertical alignment design, superelevation, and grading using OpenRoads Designer (ORD)
• Coordinate with utility, drainage, and structural disciplines throughout project development
• Prepare and review design calculations, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates
• Ensure compliance with state and/or municipal design standards, policies, and project-specific requirements
• Collaborate with project managers, clients, and agency stakeholders on project deliverables and schedules
• Assist in preparation of permits, right-of-way documents, and technical specifications
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
• Minimum 5 years of experience in roadway/transportation design
• Proficiency in OpenRoads Designer (ORD) is required
• Experience with NCDOT projects and design standards
• Familiarity with AASHTO design guidelines and roadway geometric design principles
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
• Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active pursuit of licensure
• Experience working directly on state-funded and municipal transportation projects
• Knowledge of drainage design and utility coordination as it relates to roadway projects
• Familiarity with MicroStation and other Bentley design tools
