What is a design associate?

Design Associates are entry- to mid-level professionals who support design teams in creating visual concepts, layouts, and presentations for projects across industries such as graphic design, interior design, fashion, and architecture. They assist senior designers by conducting research, preparing materials, and using design software to bring creative ideas to life. Design Associates often collaborate with clients and other team members to ensure that the final product aligns with project goals and brand standards.

What are some common challenges design associates face when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Design Associates often juggle several projects at once, which can make managing deadlines and shifting priorities a challenge. Effective communication with team members and clear organization of tasks are essential to ensure all projects move forward smoothly. Additionally, adapting quickly to feedback from clients or senior designers is key, as project requirements can change rapidly. Building strong time management skills and staying flexible will help you thrive in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Associate, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in graphic design, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate creatively are essential soft skills. These skills and qualities enable effective project execution, ensure design consistency, and foster successful teamwork in a fast-paced creative environment.

  • Coordinate with internal teams and external partners to plan, execute, and interpret product testing for security performance.

  • Develop, evaluate, and improve products for physical security applications, including ballistic resistance, forced entry resistance, and blast mitigation.

Job description

United States Bullet Proofing, Inc. (USBP) is seeking a Design Engineer to support the development, refinement, and continuous improvement of aluminum door and window systems. This role owns designs from concept through production release, with an emphasis on physical security performance – including ballistic resistance, forced entry resistance, and blast mitigation. The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical design fundamentals with hands-on knowledge of door hardware, laminated glass layups, and manufacturing processes, and is comfortable coordinating across internal teams, outside test labs, and partner engineering firms.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, detail, and document aluminum door and window assemblies and components using 3D CAD
software, producing manufacturing-ready drawings and models.
• Develop and refine products for physical security applications, including ballistic-resistant, forced-entry resistant, and blast-mitigating configurations.
• Select and specify door hardware and laminated glass layups to meet performance, code, and customer
requirements.
• Coordinate with internal stakeholders (engineering, production, quality, sales) and external partners – test
labs and outside engineering firms – to plan, execute, and interpret product testing (ballistic, forced entry,
blast, and related certifications).
• Continuously evaluate existing products to identify opportunities for immediate improvements and next generation redesigns.
• Develop, document, and maintain internal design and engineering standards, and ensure the team follows
them consistently.
• Own document and revision control for drawings, specifications, and test records, ensuring accuracy and
traceability throughout the product lifecycle.
• Maintain organized records of product development and testing documentation, including test reports,
certifications, and design history files.
• Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for design- or manufacturing-related issues identified in
production or the field.
• Communicate design status, risks, and technical findings clearly to engineering leadership and cross functional teams.
Education
• Minimum: Associate degree in Engineering or a related discipline.
• Preferred: Bachelor of Engineering (BE) or Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering.
Required Qualifications
• Experience designing or engineering products for manufacturing, with direct exposure to aluminum door
and window systems.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD Inventor or SolidWorks (or comparable 3D CAD platform).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal
stakeholders, test labs, and outside engineering firms.
• Highly organized, with strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to document and revision
control.
• Self-starter who takes initiative to learn new codes, standards, materials, and testing methods without
prompting.
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing
environment.
• Minimum 5 plus years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with physical security performance requirements: ballistics, forced entry, and blast resistance.
• Familiarity with door hardware selection and laminated glass layup design.
• Experience working with independent test labs and understanding of relevant test standards and certification
processes.
• Prior experience developing or maintaining internal engineering standards or design guidelines.
What We Offer
United States Bullet Proofing, Inc. offers the opportunity to work on mission-critical security products, a collaborative engineering environment, and the chance to shape both current products and next-generation designs from the ground up.
Location & Travel
Upper Marlboro, MD. Remote work may be available for qualified candidates. Travel to test labs is required when needed to support and observe ballistic, forced entry, and blast testing.
