Job Description
Position Summary
Manage preconstruction activities including the design process of design-build and design-assist projects. Develop new business opportunities relative to a particular client, group of clients, particular industry or business division.
Position Details
  • Independently manage design-build and design-assist projects. Assume primary leadership responsibilities for each assigned project in partnership with the engineer of record.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external project teams during preconstruction phase of projects (A/E, GC, Owner, other disciplines).
  • Initiate and maintain liaison with client personnel and coordinate with other disciplines contractors, architects, and other project team members to ensure the delivery of high-quality projects to facilitate successful construction activities within the prescribed time frames. Make presentations when necessary.
  • Communicate and manage project goals and requirements with business development, engineering, estimating, and construction project management.
  • Monitor/control design development in coordination with engineering staff.
  • Mentor and provide guidance on complex designs and technical issues.
  • Manage all financial aspects of contracts (costs, billings and collections) to maintain profitability goals and positive cash flow while simultaneously maintaining a positive relationship with the client.
  • Develop and maintain project design schedule and participate in creation of construction schedule. Compare design and construction schedules to identify, communicate, propose resolutions to conflicts between the two.
  • Respond to Request for Proposal for design services as well as review, approve, and negotiate terms on customer contracts.
  • Issue Request for Proposals and contracts to Professional Service consultants including architects and other engineering disciplines for subconsultant design services.
  • Ensure project document controls are in compliance with contract requirements and Southland standards.
  • Identify, assess, and plan to avoid or counteract risk in all phases of assigned projects.
  • Supervise/mentor the work of other project managers, assistant project managers, and engineers on assigned projects
  • Train assistant project managers in basic project management skills while utilizing them to assist in daily execution of assigned projects.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, codes, specifications and design instruction.
  • Identify design, process and equipment options that can satisfy client requirements, minimize costs and limit potential operational problems.
  • Lead developing standards, methods, processes and procedures for the engineering department.
  • Manage the design QA/QC process to deliver high-quality projects within the prescribed time frames. Provide meaningful feedback on the content on the documents to aid in quality improvement.
  • Lead on-site field surveys to collect or deliver design and engineering data.
  • Provide engineering support to business development teams during pursuit of projects.
  • Coordinate engineering resources to develop conceptual designs to support estimating
  • Coordinate engineering and business development teams to maintain a consistent construction budget throughout the design process.
  • Perform additional assignments as requested/needed.
  • Travel Requirements: <20%

Qualifications
  • 4-yr. mechanical engineering or construction science degree (or commensurate levels of technical training and related experience)
  • Extensive experience/knowledge (5-10 years) of construction, design, finance, and management
  • Active Professional Engineering license preferred
  • Ideal candidate would have both project management and engineering work experience.

  • Strong leadership and motivational skills to maximize team performance across various departments and job positions.
  • Ability to apply innovative and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance
  • Ability to develop design tasks and distribute amongst the design team
  • Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, etc., and their impact on project activities
  • Detailed understanding of all MEP calculations and designs
  • Detailed understanding of MEP system costs
  • Understanding of building codes and standards
  • Excellent analytical and technical writing skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment while adhering to project deadlines
