What is denim design?

Denim design is a specialized area within fashion design focused on creating and developing denim garments, such as jeans, jackets, and skirts. It involves selecting fabrics, determining washes and finishes, and crafting the fit and style of denim clothing. Denim designers must keep up with trends, understand textile technology, and often collaborate with manufacturers to achieve desired looks. The role combines creativity, technical knowledge, and an understanding of consumer preferences in the denim market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a denim designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Denim Designer, you need strong skills in fashion design, textile knowledge, garment construction, and a relevant degree in fashion or textile design. Familiarity with CAD software, Adobe Creative Suite, and garment washing/finishing technologies is typically required. Creativity, trend awareness, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting market demands. These competencies ensure innovative, market-appropriate denim products and successful collaboration throughout the design and production process.

How does a denim designer typically collaborate with other teams during the product development process?

As a Denim Designer, collaboration with various teams is essential throughout the product development cycle. You'll regularly work with product developers to ensure your designs are feasible for manufacturing, and partner with sourcing teams to select appropriate fabrics and finishings. Close interaction with marketing and merchandising ensures your designs align with brand strategy and consumer trends, while feedback from sales teams can guide adjustments. This cross-functional teamwork helps bring innovative denim products to market efficiently and successfully.

Job description

Position Title: Sr Technical Designer, Denim

Reporting to Title: Sr Director, Technical Design & Operations

Summary:

The Senior Technical Designer, Denim is responsible for ensuring all denim garments meet Alexander Wang's directional design vision, brand fit standards, and quality expectations through expert oversight of fit, construction, and manufacturing processes. This role partners closely with Design, Product Development, Production, and factory teams to drive consistency, quality, and efficiency from concept through production while maintaining adherence to seasonal calendars and critical deadlines. As a senior technical leader, you will mentor and develop junior technical designers, establish denim technical standards, and leverage emerging technologies to drive denim innovation.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical specifications for all new denim styles, establishing and enforcing consistency across silhouettes, fits, and wash treatments. Create and maintain detailed block patterns and grading specifications that serve as the foundation for fit consistency, working cross-functionally to ensure technical standards align with seasonal brand direction and uphold Alexander Wang's premium positioning.
  • Lead technical design reviews and live fit sessions with Designers and Patternmakers, capturing detailed fit feedback and construction notes. Translate this feedback into precise pattern corrections and garment engineering solutions that maintain both the designer's aesthetic intent and functional performance requirements.
  • Generate, manage, and oversee detailed technical packages at all development stages—from initial design packages through production specifications. Include comprehensive construction details, points of measure (POMs), fit comments, tolerance specifications, grading progressions, and wash/finish requirements.
  • Partner strategically with Design, Product Development, and Production teams to identify root causes of fit, quality, construction, and manufacturing issues. Propose innovative solutions that balance design intent with production feasibility, manufacturing timeline, and cost efficiency.
  • Evaluate vendor samples with a critical eye toward fit, construction quality, and workmanship at every development stage (CS, PP, TOP). Provide detailed feedback with specific recommendations for pattern corrections, fabric substitutions, and garment engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with Patternmakers, Production teams, and overseas factories to resolve construction challenges, quality issues, and workmanship concerns. Communicate technical specifications clearly through tech packs, fit comments, and direct partnership.
  • Track overseas sample development and shipment status meticulously, ensuring timely fit approvals for Counter Samples (CS), Pre-Production Samples (PP), and Top of Production (TOP) samples. Maintain alignment with the Time & Action calendar and production milestones.
  • Finalize and issue graded production specifications for all approved denim styles.
  • Maintain clear, timely, and professional communication across all internal and external partners across multiple geographies and time zones.
  • Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented team environment that encourages open feedback and partnership.
