Job description

Direct Counsel is seeking an experienced Complex Commercial Litigation Associate with 5+ years of litigation experience to join a sophisticated Complex Disputes practice in Boston, Massachusetts.

This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned litigator who has taken meaningful ownership of complex matters and wants to continue developing substantive trial, appellate, and dispute resolution experience. The ideal candidate will have strong academic credentials, exceptional writing and communication skills, and demonstrated experience independently handling significant aspects of litigation.

Responsibilities
  • Handle sophisticated complex commercial litigation and disputes through all stages of the litigation lifecycle.
  • Draft and respond to complex discovery requests and manage substantive discovery matters.
  • Research, draft, and argue motions and other litigation-related briefing.
  • Prepare for and conduct depositions, as well as defend clients and witnesses in depositions.
  • Conduct witness interviews and assist with witness preparation.
  • Lead and participate in discovery conferences and negotiations with opposing counsel.
  • Manage significant aspects of pre-trial preparation and case strategy.
  • Argue motions and assist with or participate in appellate matters.
  • Work collaboratively with litigation teams while taking direct responsibility for assigned matters.
  • Represent clients in sophisticated disputes involving trial and appellate proceedings and alternative dispute resolution.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of substantive litigation experience.
  • Active admission to the Massachusetts State Bar is required.
  • Demonstrated direct responsibility for:
    • Complex written discovery
    • Motion practice
    • Depositions
    • Witness interviews
    • Pre-trial preparation
    • Discovery conferences
    • Negotiations with opposing counsel
    • Motion and/or appellate arguments
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Superb judgment and client-service skills.
  • Ability to take ownership of matters and thrive in a sophisticated, fast-paced litigation environment.
  • Motivated, proactive, and highly organized.
Preferred Experience
  • Judicial clerkship experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience handling sophisticated commercial or other complex disputes.
  • Trial, appellate, mediation, arbitration, or other alternative dispute resolution experience.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Base Salary: $300,000–$350,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Potential additional contingent compensation based on factors including performance, experience, qualifications, and other applicable considerations.
