How much do commission dealership detailing jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for commission dealership detailing in the United States is $16.45, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $17.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commission Dealership Detailer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commission Dealership Detailer, you need strong attention to detail, excellent manual dexterity, and a good understanding of automotive cleaning techniques, which may be supported by prior experience or on-the-job training. Familiarity with detailing tools, polishing equipment, cleaning chemicals, and sometimes dealership management systems is important. Outstanding time management, reliability, and customer service skills help you stand out in this fast-paced environment. These abilities ensure vehicles are consistently presented at the highest standard, leading to customer satisfaction and increased sales opportunities for the dealership.

What are commission dealership detailing jobs?

Commission dealership detailing jobs involve cleaning, restoring, and finishing vehicles at car dealerships, with pay based on the number or type of vehicles serviced rather than an hourly wage. Detailers may be responsible for both interior and exterior cleaning, polishing, and minor cosmetic touch-ups to prepare cars for sale or return. The commission structure incentivizes detailers to complete more vehicles efficiently while maintaining quality standards. This type of pay can result in higher earnings for fast, skilled workers but may also depend on dealership volume and demand.

How much to tip on a $200 car detail?

For a commission dealership detailing job, tipping is typically 15-20% of the service cost, so a $200 car detail would warrant a tip of $30 to $40. Tipping practices can vary based on quality of service and customer satisfaction. Providing a tip within this range is considered standard industry etiquette.

How much can a Car Detailer make a week?

A car detailer at a dealership can typically earn between $300 and $600 per week, depending on experience, location, and whether they work full-time or part-time. Some detailers also earn tips, which can increase weekly income, especially in busy or high-end dealerships.

What are some common challenges faced by commission-based dealership detailers, and how can they be managed?

Commission-based dealership detailers often face challenges such as fluctuating workloads, time management under tight deadlines, and varying income due to seasonal sales trends. Managing these challenges involves maintaining efficient detailing techniques, clear communication with sales and service teams, and staying organized to handle peak periods. Building good relationships within the dealership and consistently delivering high-quality work can also help secure a steady flow of detailing assignments.

How much do car detailers charge per hour?

Car detailers typically charge between $15 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the service. Rates may be higher for specialized detailing or luxury vehicles, and some detailers offer flat rates for specific packages instead of hourly charges.

What is the difference between Commission Dealership Detailing vs Car Wash Technician?

AspectCommission Dealership DetailingCar Wash Technician
CredentialsBasic automotive knowledge, detailing certifications often preferredMinimal certifications, on-the-job training common
Work EnvironmentDealerships, auto shops, luxury car centersCar washes, service stations, automated or manual washes
Employer & IndustryAuto dealerships, luxury car brands, automotive service centersCar wash chains, service stations, quick-service facilities

Commission Dealership Detailing involves providing detailed cleaning and cosmetic restoration services for vehicles, often earning commissions based on services performed. Car Wash Technicians focus on cleaning vehicles at wash stations, typically earning hourly wages. While both roles involve vehicle cleaning, dealership detailing emphasizes high-quality, detailed work often with higher earning potential, whereas car wash technicians perform quicker, routine cleaning tasks.

How much do dealerships pay their detailers?

Dealerships typically pay commission dealership detailers an hourly wage ranging from $12 to $20, with some earning additional tips or bonuses based on performance. Pay rates can vary depending on location, experience, and the dealership's size, with many detailers working full-time or part-time schedules and requiring basic cleaning skills and tools.
