Job description

Senior Systems Engineer 

Location: Beachwood, OH

Shift: Monday - Friday 8am -5pm (Onsite 4 days a week)

Position Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, and support of Penske Logistics' enterprise infrastructure environment, including server, storage, virtualization, cloud, and backup technologies. This role provides day-to-day operational support for both Windows and Linux server platforms while ensuring high availability, performance, scalability, and security across enterprise systems.

The Senior Systems Engineer will lead and support infrastructure initiatives involving virtualization platforms, storage systems, automation, disaster recovery, and cloud-integrated technologies. This position requires strong technical expertise, project leadership capabilities, and the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams to deliver reliable and innovative IT solutions that support Penske's business operations.

The role includes participation in after-hours support, maintenance windows, and on-call rotation responsibilities.

Major Responsibilities

  • Administer, maintain, monitor, and support enterprise Windows and Linux server environments
  • Manage and support virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, Hyper-V, and related infrastructure technologies
  • Support enterprise storage environments including Dell EMC, SAN/NAS, and fiber channel and ethernet technologies
  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available virtual infrastructure solutions
  • Monitor system health, performance, and capacity planning for servers, storage, and virtualization platforms
  • Ensure systems and infrastructure adhere to organizational security standards and remediation practices
  • Implement automation and operational efficiencies using PowerShell, PowerCLI, Bash, Python, or similar scripting tools
  • Perform disaster recovery planning, testing, documentation, and ongoing operational readiness activities
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and patch operating systems, hypervisors, and enterprise applications
  • Support cloud and hybrid-cloud infrastructure initiatives across on-premises and cloud environments
  • Manage enterprise backup and recovery solutions and ensure data protection standards are maintained
  • Lead infrastructure projects from planning and design through implementation and operational support
  • Develop project plans, timelines, risk assessments, contingency plans, and status reporting
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and business stakeholders on infrastructure solutions and strategic initiatives
  • Create and maintain infrastructure documentation, diagrams, standards, and operational procedures
  • Maintain server inventory, lifecycle management documentation, and asset tracking
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations for infrastructure modernization and optimization
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to support staff
  • Ensure proper management processes are followed for all infrastructure modifications
  • Provide after-hours support for infrastructure-related incidents and scheduled maintenance activities
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant infrastructure administration experience will be considered
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in systems engineering, infrastructure administration, or enterprise IT support
  • 2-3 years of experience leading or supporting mid-to-large scale infrastructure projects
  • Strong experience administering Windows Server and Linux server operating systems (Red Hat, Ubuntu, or similar)
  • Experience supporting enterprise virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, Hyper-V, or similar technologies
  • Experience with enterprise storage technologies including Dell EMC, SAN, NAS, and fiber channel infrastructure
  • Experience with Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and identity/access management concepts
  • Experience with cloud platforms and hybrid infrastructure environments preferred
  • Experience with monitoring, backup, and disaster recovery solutions
  • Strong scripting and automation experience using PowerShell, PowerCLI, Bash, Python, or similar tools
  • Knowledge of enterprise networking concepts, VLANs, and network interface configuration
  • Experience implementing security remediation and infrastructure hardening best practices
  • Strong documentation, troubleshooting, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications including Visio

Preferred Certifications

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP)
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or equivalent Linux certification
  • Relevant cloud or infrastructure certifications preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Ability to work the required schedule, travel as necessary, and participate in after-hours support rotations
  • Ability to read, analyze, and communicate technical information verbally and in writing
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
