Job description

Become a member of The Dell Crew. 

The Dell Crew’s mission is to embody the spirit, tradition, and excitement of the University of Lynchburg and its athletic programs through the energetic and charismatic representation of our mascot, Dell the Hornet. The Dell Crew will enhance school pride, promote fan engagement, and represent the University at games, campus events, and community activities.

Members will rotate responsibilities as our campus mascot, Dell, and the handler/assistant. 

Roles and responsibilities include wearing the Dell mascot costume, performing, interacting with fans, and upholding the character's persona.

The secondary role as handler/assistant includes assisting with costume, escorting Dell, ensuring performer safety, and facilitating fan interaction. 

Dell Mascot 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performance: Bring Dell the Hornet to life through non-verbal communication, consistent high energy, and engaging movement (e.g., dancing, stunts, skits).
  • Character Maintenance: Uphold the established personality of Dell—friendly, spirited, mischievous, and a symbol of Hornet pride.
  • Event Participation: Perform at scheduled University events, including home football/soccer (as applicable), basketball, and select other athletic contests, as well as campus and community appearances.

Costume Care: Handle and clean the Dell costume according to guidelines to ensure its longevity and readiness.

Dell Handler/Assistant

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety & Logistics: Serve as the mascot's eyes and ears, guiding Dell around venues, ensuring performer safety, and managing time-outs/breaks.
  • Fan Facilitation: Assist with fan interactions, distributing small giveaways, taking photos, and managing crowds around the mascot.
  • Costume Transportation: Assist in the transport and preparation of the Dell costume and props before and after events.
  • Support: Serve as a backup performer, if qualified and needed, during emergencies or if a performer is unavailable.

Dell Mascot Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled, full-time University of Lynchburg student in good academic standing.
  • Physical stamina, flexibility, and a tolerance for heat.
  • Excellent non-verbal communication and crowd interaction skills.
  • Reliability, professionalism, and the ability to maintain the secrecy of the Dell identity.


Dell Handler/Assistant Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled, full-time University of Lynchburg student in good academic standing.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Alertness, responsibility, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Try-Out Process and Criteria

Tryouts will be held annually, typically in the spring, with a supplemental round in the fall if positions remain open.

A. Eligibility:

  • Full-time University of Lynchburg student status.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (or as determined by the University).
  • Completed application and required liability/medical release forms.
