SALARY: $24.00-26.00

The Huntingtonย is seeking aย Calderwoodย Pavilionย Deck Lead.ย The recipient of the 2013 Regional Theatre Tony Award, the Huntington Theatre brings together superb local and national talent to produce a mix of groundbreakingย new worksย andย classicsย made current each season. Led byย Artisticย Directorย Loretta Greco, the Huntington creates award-winning productions, runs nationally renowned programs in education and new play development, and serves the local theatre community through its operation of the Stanford Calderwoodย Pavilionย at the Boston Center for the Arts.ย The Huntingtonย cultivates, celebrates, and champions theatre as an art form.ย ย 

RESPONSIBILITIESย 

The Calderwood Pavilionย Deckย Leadโ€™s primary responsibility is to support the load-in, technical rehearsal process, andย showย run ofย The Huntingtonโ€™sย productions as a member of the scenery team. This individualย operatesย and maintains scenic elements, executes scene shifts, presets props, and runs performances as aย stagehand, with duties varying on a show-by-show basis. This position serves as the primary operator for the fly system and/or stage automationย system, ensuring the safe and precise execution of all cues.ย ย Theย Deckย Leadย assistsย the Stage Management team inย supervisingย additionalย run crew personnel on larger productions.ย 

Theย Deckย Leadย communicatesย closely with the scenery, paint, and prop teamsย to relay any production needs requiring external support, while alsoย identifyingย issues and implementing practical solutions toย maintainย the integrity and function of the scenery during the run.ย This positionย primarilyย supports productionsย at the Calderwoodย Pavilion, butย may includeย working atย other venues as assigned.ย This position requires flexibility, with work primarily occurring evenings and weekends,ย as well asย extended days during the rehearsal process.ย 

The Calderwood Pavilionย Deckย Leadย is also an integral member of the venueโ€™s operations team.ย When there is not a Huntington production at the Calderwood, the Deck Lead acts as a steward of the venueย and has a role in caring for theย people, equipment, and facility that manyย local artists call home.ย This individual will work with the Operations Supervisorย to:ย execute rental productions as a member of the scenery team, aid with venue upkeep/ย operations, and run events with theย Calderwood Operationsย Team.ย This includes butย isย not limitedย to:ย plays and musicals from other theatre companies both local and touring, concerts, conferences,ย presentations,ย weddings, and other gatherings.ย This eventย workย and supporting rental productions represents the majority ofย the Deck Leadโ€™s time.ย 

JOB DESCRIPTION/DUTIES:ย 

  • Work allย load-ins, strikes, technical rehearsals,ย show calls and runs the scenery track often including automationย ย 

  • Responsible for maintenance andย upkeep of scenery on stage during show run.ย 

  • Worksย inย a safe and efficient manner andย in accordance withย HTCย policies andย standards.ย ย Instructs and supervises others in theย sameย asย appropriate.ย 

  • Leadย smallerย teamsย duringย load-ins and strikes, as assigned, such asย riggingย or automation team.ย 

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and efficient workspace, often in conjunction withย Operations, Stage Management, and Scenery Teams.ย 

  • Assistsย withย special events, projects, and rental asย requiredย which may involve work notย immediatelyย related to scenery such as setting up tables, chairs, seating risers, or aiding with other departments.ย 

  • Provides assistance, guidance, training, and supervision to rental users in coordination with the Technical Director and Calderwood Management.ย 

  • Communicate with supervisorsย regardingย the progress of assigned projectsย and projected problems.ย 

  • Maintenance and upkeep of Calderwood Pavilion venue facilities and equipment in conjunction with the Operations Team.ย Examples include inventory, paperwork,ย preventativeย and reactive maintenance.ย 

  • Open andย Closeย the Calderwood Pavilion when assigned.ย 

  • Other duties, as assignedย which may include working cross-departmentallyย 

REQUIRED SKILLS:ย 

  • Experience running shows as a stagehand/deck crewย 

  • Theatrical construction/carpentry skillsย 

  • Experience withย stageย machinery, winches, and some theatrical automation.ย 

  • Experience with theatrical/entertainment riggingย techniques;ย including use, operation, and maintenance of a single purchase line set system; chain motors; and spot rigging.ย 

  • Comfortable working on ladders,ย aerial lifts, and heights up to 30 feetย 

  • Knowledgeableย ofย materials and the proper use of each for scenery construction, particularly wood,ย metal,ย and plastics.ย ย 

  • Knowledgeable in the safe use of typical wood/metalย machineย and hand power tools.ย 

  • Mustย possessย a keen awareness of shop safety and procedures.ย 

  • Must be able to read technical drawings and be able to layout based on drawings.ย 

  • Ability to lead a crew of up to 10 people with varying skill levels and experience.ย 

  • Effective communicator, collaborative,ย organized,ย and flexibleย 

  • Organized and detail orientedย 

  • Ability to lift 50-100ย lbsย 

PREFERREDย SKILLS:ย 

  • Experience with Creative Conners automation equipment and software.ย 

  • Experience welding light gauge steel.ย 

  • Comfortableย workingย at heights of 60+ ftย 

  • Basic sewingย 

  • Basic Solderingย 

  • Basic painting/touch up skillsย 

  • Basic knowledge of theatrical lightingย
